I'm considering buying an AK but don't know a lot about them other than the very basics. What should I look for in a descent AK? What brands should I stay away from? I just want something to have a little fun with and not a bad idea to grab one before the election.

Ive owned AKs from $400 WASR to $1000 Arsenal. Started off with the WASR and it shot just fine. I figured a $1000 Arsenal would be a much nicer gun but it wasnt worth the extra $600 to me. Ive since sold both and only have a $400 Yugo pistol that had issues out of the box. Id say get the cheapest AK that runs like a machine.

I don't know how you feel about the SKS, have had mine for many years. Fun for plinking, shooting deer or hogs. Cheap ammo. Shots just fine and cheaper in cost.
Want to get a upper assembly for the AR.

I've got everything from wasr to arsenal, and everywhere in between. My wasr shoots just as well as the rest. I've put multiple thousands of rounds through them all. Save money and get a wasr. At 100 yrds I'm holding a 1 1/2-2inch pattern and that's good enough for me. Milled receivers will hold up better over time, but imo it's not necessary. If you are ever out this way, stop by and u can handle and shoot any of them u would like.

thanks. I got a buddy offering to sell me a Wasr but hasn't told me a price yet. I've shot a few AKs in Iraq and Afghanistan but nothing here in the states. I'm looking to shoot open sights and wanting wood furniture.

Check out the WASR RH10, a modernized WASR but still way less money than an Arsenal, my Century C39 is great as well but a little heavy.

That's a great deal in today's market. I'd jump on it if I were you. If you don't want it I'll take it. Check out the VEPR 7.62 x 39 from Kvar for $699. Just got one and the quality of it is really nice compared to my other AK's. Will take a little work to get it to use steel surplus 30 round magazines. Needs a bullet guide installed which isn't a big deal. $20 for the guide and $30 to install if you don't want to install yourself. File a little off the magazine release and you're good to go.

I just picked up a Norinco MAK 90 in a trade a couple of days ago. Going to replace the thumb hole stock and tapco hang guards with a nice set of wood furniture from Ironwoods Designs. The action and trigger on this MAK is very smooth.

Ive got a vepr like sick train, on bada@# rifle. Also, if you get that Wasr, the only upgrade I would do is get a Tapco g2 single hook trigger. Makes a world of difference and the trigger wont slap the heck out of youre finger.

Good to know. Have you tried the new CMC AK47 trigger they just released?

Ive looked into them, but they are too damn expensive for my tastes. I might consider one for my arsenal though. The reason being is this: AKs are an inherently innacurate rifle. I don't think a $150-250 trigger is going to make them that much more accurate as they come from the factory. If you accurized, or built one, the trigger would make sense to me.

Here it is. Paid 450 out the door. Nothing special just a WASR 10 he had it priced to the public for 600 so I think I got a pretty good deal. Hope it cycles well and I don't run into any issues. Function check was good and looks to be in good shape as well.

Any ammo I should stay away from or do these things eat anything?

Dang, that was a good deal. Looks like its in great shape too. Feed it anything and everything and it should run just fine.

If you're dead set on changing out the trigger...check out the ALG

I'm not dead set on it was just curious about that CMC. I've read there were issues with rivets and stuff when changing out. This is just for fun and maybe try and use it for hogs with iron sights. Looking forward to shooting it haven't shot one in years.

Check out the ALG trigger or the Tapco G2. No use putting a 250$ on a 425$ gun. Leave it how it is and shoot the snot out of it.
