Me and son got drawn for the TPWD dove hunt category. It's a one day hunt in Young county, about an hour away. Good thing is there is no permit fee! Anybody else get drawn for that hunt?

Congrats on the draw. I did not apply for any since they were all a long way from home for a afternoon dove hunt. Please post a follow up on the hunt so we can know how it went.

I put in for the young county one. No luck here, pending 2nd draw which I doubt there will be one. I put in for it because I have a deer lease near there. You should have a great hunt. When I was out that way recently the sunflowers, dove weed, and water all looked great. Lots of resident dove present. Be sure to run over to Newcastle for a hamburger from the "Hole in the Wall" while your there. They make the best hamburger around in those parts.

Thanks. Will do. This one is an all day hunt I believe (or limit out). The other locations were afternoon only. Looking forward to some time with my son!

Yes. Suprised me. This was one of the $10 entry, no permit fee hunts.

That's great Sniper John! My son and I look forward to seeing you there. I talked to the guy that runs the place we will be hunting on (Ed at Wingsport Depot). Nice guy! He said the field we will start on is 200+ acres. If that field isn't hot, he has 3-4 other fields within 20 minutes that he will move us to. He said the morning is usually good, but there are usually 3-4 times more birds in the evenings.

Either way, my son and I are looking forward to going. Not bad for $10 total for the two of us!

I believe you're the first one I know about that has hit on a "pending 2nd draw". That's pretty cool in itself. up

I don't know the statistics, but I doubt drawing 2nd draw is that unusual on some hunts. Since there is no preference point only option I know a lot of people who can't hunt this season or this month etc. are applying for some of the low odds hunts just for the preference point, or adding zero point non hunting family members to dumb down the odds to do same. Especially out of state hunters since they pay the same inexpensive $3 or $10 as us. But private land dove does not build preference points, so for this one at least it seems odd someone would pay the $10 to apply just to turn it down and let it go to 2nd draw.

My son and I went on the hunt Saturday. Wasn't that great. A storm had come in the night before. Weren't very many birds at all. My son shot 2 and I got skunked. I had another place lined up to go to that evening if it wasn't good there...so I didn't do the evening hunt. Not sure how it went.

The outfitter was nice and apologized for the lack of birds. He even offered to let everyone come back on another day since the hunting wasn't good that day. With bow season right around the corner, we probably won't take him up on his offer though.

It's always good to be out in God's Creation with my son though...so it was a successful day!

Oh well. At least you had a good time. I wonder if they will continue the private lands dove next year?

If they do, it be great to have it earlier in the season and/or a field that hasn't been hunted yet. By the third weekend of dove season, the birds start getting leary and move out if a cold front comes in. But, it's only $10 to enter so it's not a waste of too much money. I love the fact that they are expanding the game options, but I probably won't apply for it next year unless it changes up some.

I made the hunt and thought the hunt with Wingsport went pretty well for the conditions. My deer lease is just a few miles south of where we hunted that morning. Day before at my lease when I arrived it was obvious it has just rained. A lot of rain. The field on my Deer lease had zero Dove on Friday and that is very unusual. Our birds had been pushed out with that last weak front, so I was worried. Saturday morning I met Ed with Wingsport, he welcomed my dog and pointed us in a direction of a field noting there were some sunflowers on the back side. A married couple hunted 90 degrees on the field from me and I could tell there was a group on the other two sides doing some shooting. Not many dove moving early, but there was a window later when the birds started showing up. I missed more birds than I shot. For the evening hunt, we changed locations from near Olney to one near Elbert TX that had not been hunted since the weekend before. I was limited by needing shade for my dog. I know the group beyond me did a lot of shooting. Again slow early, but there was a window later that had a lot of dove moving. I got caught up visiting with another hunter and a TPWD biologist who was on the area or I would have shot more birds. I think I finished the day with around 8. If I were more mad at the birds and more willing to move and pay attention I could have done much better. Everyone was invited to come back any Saturday for a free hunt and Ed noted he would like to get the group together on an email so he could let us all know when they have more birds migrated in. I enjoyed the hunt as did my Vizsla Dash. No complaints here. I'll be putting in for the same hunt next year.
