My container is getting full of tools and other things
I don't want to stack 10 bags of corn in there and have trouble parking the side by side

what do you guys think of using clean steel drums with lids and just setting it outside?
I should be able to get 6 or so 50# bags into one 55 gal drum, right?

We keep our spare bags in a large metal trash can with a lid. It does okay for a short period, haven't had any trouble yet. You won't fit as many in there as you think, because corn in the bag doesn't fill a space nearly as well as poured corn. It's a struggle to get 3 bags into a 31 gallon trash can.

I think it's hard to get 4 bags (in bags) in a drum, 3 is a stretch, but it could just be the WWI gun powder drums I used to use.

Make sure they're dry and use the feed fairly quick. I got harvest mites one time and now I am freaked out by anything resembling old feed. Think ringworm over your stomach, chest, arms and neck for a couple of weeks.

Personally, I'd reorganize/reduce in the container.

We used freezers that don't work but have good seals, chest types. It did fine you still have to rotate. Not long term.

there are many ways to store grain, most require haz-mat lic, but drums w/the locking rims are as insect-proof as you'll find...
malathion is a good treatment, but it stinks.

Years ago we stored corn in drums and old freezers but it always molded due to the moisture that is in corn at harvest. Anything tightly sealed in this Texas heat will sweat/condensate and ruin over time. If you store it don't store it very long. If you do keep it out of the direct sunlight if at all possible. We lost a lot of corn that got moldy.

Thanks guys for the ideas
I only run 2 full size feeders and sometimes a hanging bucket type
So ten bags last a month or two

I have a spare 50 gallon drum near each of my feeders. They are my secondary and emergency storage. Each drum holds 5, 50 lbs bags easily enough.

We do and just use a rain cover for the lid. Works fine. Normally dont keep anything in there more than a couple months.

I tried it years ago, never could keep the moisture out, just ended up with hog bait.

We stored about a ton or two in the blue plastic drums with screw on lids last season. Kept them on a trailer off the ground and under a pole barn. Had no issues with weevils or moisture, but we had it all out within a couple months. Stored in bulk, not in bags. I would think the bags would encourage more moisture and mold.

To keep down pests in metal drums:

Put a candle in a metal coffee can and put this in the top of your drum.
Light the candle and seal the drum.
The candle will burn until it has removed all the oxygen from the drum.
Re-lite the candle every time you open the drum.

Five and a half 50 lb bags will go easy in a 55 gal drum if it doesn't have to much cracked corn in it. If it's gonna sit more than a few weeks you will be ahead to sprinkle some sevin or malathion dust on it as you pour it in.

That's a pretty good tip. Another thing you can do is leave some space in the top and then top it off with dry ice. Let it vent a little until the dry ice is almost gone. Then seal it tight. The CO2 will displace the oxygen and moisture.

I have been down this road, with corn available at so many locations we gave up and buy as needed. Over a season you might have save a few dollars, but the extra work of loading, then unloading and storing and loading again wasn't worth the few dollars.

Yup^^^^^additional aggravation plus chance of spoilage isn't worth it......if we have any left over after filling feeders it is placed in a metal trash can (1-6 bags usually)....these are the first to be used the next time cking feeders....usually 3-4 weeks......no long term storage......bugs and moisture makes it not worth the hassle....

I use a 55 to keep those 1 or 2 extra bags. Mine is in a barn out of the sun. no problems yet and I have kept it in there for 6 months at a time.

Since we just use a metal rain cover and not the actual lid for the drums I think it lets moisture out since it is not tight and not spoil. Just what I have seen. But anything over two months you run the risk. Also empty out the barrel completely at times too to get any dust out. I have kept several bags and an open bag in mine (use for hand corning) for 3 months and no issues.

we have stored corn in 55 drums with lids, no treatment, had some lasted past 2yrs, has to be dry which should not be a problem unless it was harvested under less than ideal conditions, the drums were inside a shed

Not worth the effort to me. I buy corn when I need it.

I'll use metal drum with locking lid for left over bags (can fit 3-4 bags) but only for short period of time a few weeks until next visit. Just filled feeders this weekend on new place and had 4 bags left over but no drum yet. We brought bags home and will use in feeder close to home. Drums are not worth the spoilage risk for any long term storage.
