I was getting my hunting gear ready for some pig hunting this weekend. My bag was kind of in disarray, so I pulled everything out and repacked it...as I did, I suddenly realized I was more worried about having enough BATTERIES than I was about having enough ammo. When did this happen?

I took a picture of all the batteries in my bag...then I realized the pic did not represent all I was taking with me. There is the Li-Ion rechargable for the thermal scope, plus a portable cell phone charger.

I remember going 'yot calling as a teenager and all that was required was a new 6 Volt lantern battery for the headlamp, a half box of .243, and my rifle. Now I've got a bag with almost 15# of stuff in it, plus a Pelican case with the electronics.

Just as a sanity check...all this technology means we are having more fun. Right?

We all need to practice Whoa more.

It's worse if you have 3 kids that want to participate.

Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

When you grow up poor, you learn to make a box of 30-30 shells last for 4 years.

Not 20 years, but I had a box of .243 100 gr that lasted 4 or 5 years of deer hunting. But in that same time, I probably went through 5 boxes of 72 gr varmint loads...but we were getting $5 - $10 a piece for coyote pelts (gotta learn to make those head shots).

rofl those two rounds were ones left overs from first deer lease, when stand was just climbing a tree, several times caught in rain... casing's actualy were turning color were powder ended... Also found good deal on a .270 savage with scope at Walmart for under $200.00, son also got a .270 & wife a .243 that year... That & hunting 1 buck counties & other leases didn't have hogs, ammo lasted awhile... two different occations fireing pin fell on primmer at close range hogs in switch cane ending in dry fire... removed the lead & powder was clumped together... That & a dry fire on a huge buck back in 70's with my Kentucky .45 when woke up from me nap on hill side, tis reason say: Keep your head held high & your powder dry ... had fired & cleaned the .45 night before a hunt, bang forgot to fire a cap before pouring powder & seating patch & ball that night, it not considered loaded until cap is on... did end up with a nice 8 pointer though... Part of hunting... yawn another sleepless night, i got cheap posts... flag

Climb up tree in backwoods Oklahoma last year with bow. Ranged about 3 maybe 4 spots with range finder and batteries went out! We're talking town that rolls up the pavment at sundown so what you think odds are of finding battery for my Bushnell? I did get lucky and find one! banana

Brayden (Lazy L's Southern Comfort) you will be missed! You were more than a pet you were my reason to rise and return for many days! You were my rock!

I don't need a lot of ammo. In the last 4 years I have taken 5 deer and a pronghorn and have fired 6 shots total. I rarely carry more than 5 rounds into the field, 3 in my 7 mag and 1 in each breast pocket of my shirt. I won't fire unless I know I can make the shot since I'm getting too old to chase a wounded deer around. When you get right down to it, how much ammo do you really need on the average big game hunt? And I don't need batteries for anything besides my flashlight.

that's because you're a real hunter. nobody should ever try a marginal shot
though many these days often do

I do not need a lot of ammo, but I have enough for ten years and that includes a lot of night hunting for pigs. Not paranoid, just pissed that I had to make so much effort trying to but 308 9 mm 22 lr. Couldn't have picked worse calibers for ammo shortage.

Big Beckett!!
