This morning, over at the yard feeder, we had a doe and twin fawns and a buck and doe. The buck mounted the doe and was working like a porn star. I've never seen that in August. Was he just an enthusiastic teenager? It can't be the rut...

May be proud cut like some gelding's I have seen.

Doe can come in heat anytime of the year if they are still open... and bucks will work them regardless. I wouldn't call it rut though. This rarely changes as far as time periods each year imo

They are already pre-rut in my area. It will be full swing in just a few weeks. Here's some info on rut times in different parts of Texas.

Yea, they are called Avery Island whitetail. They are usually a little darker, especially down the back. Here's a pic of one in a wooded area of the Dow Chemical plant in Freeport.

I always wondered about this. Knew a guy who had two dogs, male and female. He decided he didn't want puppies so had the female spayed. The male would still breed her frequently.

Maybe it just the case that the buck was feeling frisky and she didn't buck him off?

That's the best study ever done by TPWD in my opinion. Large sampling based on fawn development of bred doe. Everyone should be familiar with it.

Yesterday i saw a buck chasing a doe that had an older fawn with her. Not sure if there was any breeding intentions going on but you never know. The buck was still in velvet as i woukd expect.

I saw mature bucks chasing does in last week of Sept(24th or so) in the 90's in NE Kendall County one year after a very early cold front. When we killed does in late Dec yearly and checked fetus length we had some that would be bred the first week of Oct. Earliest I ever seen a fawn on the ground was April 4th or 5th there. He was big enough to run from me and I was close to him when he ran from me to see him clearly. I had no idea he was in that taller grass. Was common to find a few fawns by April 25th or so each year. More by first week of May than late April though. Rut was supposed to be Mid Oct (15th to 21st) each yr according TPWD study.
