I don't own a 17wsm, friend does. It is a decent step up from the 17hmr but ammo is not as common. I shoot the 17hmr and a 17 fireball. You are looking at speeds of 2350 to 2550 for the hmr, 3000 fps for the wsm and 4000 fps for the fireball. Unless I ran across a good deal on the wsm i'll most likely not have one. Ammo for the fireball is getting scarce but stocked up on it. I go through a lot of 17hmr on pond turtles and just plinking.
Just my $0.02.

We were shooting prairie dogs this weekend at 250 yards to 300 yards with my Ruger 17 WSM. It was the first time I really got to shoot it and to me it is a great gun.

Personally I would go with the HMR because you can buy the ammo anywhere.

As a reloader at least for me it is hard to reload 17 caliber bullets. They are just to small and hard for me to handle. The only reason I would get a 17 WSM is because I would be reloading for it.

I shoot my cousin's 17 WSM early this year on a prairie dog hunt and it would kill them but it did not blow them up like a 22-250. Wind also seemed to effect the round quite a bit. At 100-150 yards it seemed the WSM moved more than the HMR with wind blowing across. Also seemed to shift POI with wind from behind. This analysis is based on dirt impact and not paper.

Also, it heats a barrel up real fast which could also be part of the shift. It only took 3-4 shoots and the barrel was real hot. This is not ideal for high volume hunting.

Nate, the WSM is a rimfire cartridge as well. It sounds like you were shooting one of the centerfire variants. To answer the OP's question, I'll give another vote for the HMR, albeit I haven't shot the WSM. I own three HMR's as well as a .17 Remington and love them all. It's a time proven cartridge that's here to stay, and is inherently accurate in most guns. And as stated, ammo for the HMR is widely available, with multiple firearm platforms to choose from. The WSM, while impressive, just hasn't been around long enough to sway me. The HMR has plenty of punch for my uses(small vermin up to raccoons), and you hear plenty of people talk about shooting coyotes and hogs with them, though it wouldn't be my first choice.

I vote HMR all the way. I have both and just due to my horrible experience with the SAVAGE WSM I would not recommend anyone buy one. It shoots ok but not great I can keep my hmr within about a 2" spread easily from 100 yards... the savage wsm it is so oddball throwing random bullets I bet it doesnt shoot a 3-4" spread consistently from 100 yards. Just my experience and 2 cents.

I have both and the 17 WSM rides with me every day, deadly inside 200 yards but can be stretched farther. I shoot a B-Mag and after getting used to the trigger it out shoots my Remington 597 in 17 HMR. I paid a hell of allot more for the Rem. I order my ammo by the case and have had no problem finding it.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

same here, I also have the wsm. in a ar platform, not as accurate as the hmr, but fun to shoot and will kill coyotes, my shots are up to 100 yds, by the way I have an extra hmr savage mag still in the pkg if anyone is interested

So, I talked to my cousin turns out his gun that we were calling a 17WSM was actually a 17WSSM. He had a gunsmith build it for him off a 223 WSSM. He necked the 223 WSSM down to 17 caliber. Sorry for the mis-information.

I bet that WSSM is an absolute screamer Nate. You know what kind of velocity he's getting?
