HUTCHINSON COUNTY, TX (KFDA) -
One study set to begin this fall could make a difference for farmers and hunters in the eastern panhandle.

The migration pattern of mule deer and how it affects hunting and farming in the panhandle has never been tracked before.

But now Texas Parks & Wildlife is teaming up with Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute, Texas Tech University and Sul Ross University to learn how landowners can best cope with these deer.

Texas Parks & Wildlife said it gets regular complaints from farmers who could see hundreds of these deer at once eating their crops.

"It's very easy to look out there and, you know, if you see 200 head of mule deer on your crop land to go, 'we've got a problem, and they're damaging the crops,' which they probably are," said Chadd Malone, wildlife biologist with Texas Parks & Wildlife. "But if we find out how long those deer are actually utilizing those crops, that may aid those farmers in better managing when they plant the crops or maybe how they build their fences or what crops they plant during what times of the year."

I didn't realize that TX mule deer migrated. Should be interesting.

Here is a neat video that really makes one realize the challenges they face.

This is from Wyoming, but still worth a watch.

Just following the forage and ag crop from year to year as the crops mature. Corn, young cotton bolls, wheat, maize/milo, peanuts, alfalfa, soy beans, and a few other vegetable crops on the plains.

x2

But it makes sense now as to why I see different densities of mulies from year to year on my place when the whitetail (and all other wildlife for that matter) seem to remain about the same despite conditions.

I have learned this about Mulies hunting them every year over the last 10 years.

They migrate in large circles that cover several miles. I've learned to just keep checking in with them to see if there in town or traveling. up

Well worth the watch. I love hearing about new 'discoveries' like that.

Hunted south side of Palo Duro state park and we had 100 acre wheat field and have seen 100 deer in the field. trouble is the season is too early for rut as TPWD sets season up so wardens can work pheasant season then the deer season. They need to allow some does taken to thin out the heard some. The big boys didn't come out of the canyon until 3 weeks after the season was over. The Amarillo foundation donated a big ranch with large lodge to TPWD and I'm sure the big boys with TPWD get to hunt it. Should be opened up on a draw system. rifle

They need to transplant some of those deer down to the Davis/Apache and Chinati mountains and put guzzlers out for them like they do for big horn sheep. JMO.

We have a neighbor that really hates to see a herd of 20+ MD in his young cotton fields. They love to eat the green boll when they are young/tender. Leaves a bare spot with no cotton on the edges of fields. Cost him many $$$$

Don't know what they can do with study information except fence them out.

Same problem with pronghorn on our winter wheat, counted well over 150. It wouldn't be bad if they where like cattle and would leave a few inches allowing the WW to rebound. They literally eat it to the soil.

I wouldn't mind helping some of these farmers out with their Muley problems.
