So I have a lease up near Newcastle TX and in the past couple of years I have noticed a decrease in the numbers of deer I am seeing during the season. I think what could contribute to this, is the amount of rain we have received in the past couple springs causing the grass to grow to extreme lengths that are taller than the deer allowing them to sneak by pretty easy. However I did clear out the grass all around my feeder out to about 150 yards, and I didnt see as much at the feeder as usual. I know its not a decline in the deer heard in the area because I saw many great bucks shot on surrounding properties. I know there isnt too much human activity on the property, because no one is there really until the hunting season starts unless its just to fill the feeders. It could be the food sources but from what I have seen, every piece of property just has wheat fields on it so there arent varying food plots or anything like that. Could it be that they have just migrated to other properties over the years and now use those properties as there home property?

Good rains mean natural vegetation is in good shape and abundant. Your feeder has much less pulling power on the deer in a wet year than dry years.

Deer come and go especially on small properties. They'll be back. I got a pic of a buck on our place several years ago. I saw that deer crossing a road several miles away. I knew it was him because he had a really weird looking rack.

In the end, it's not the years in your life that count, it's the life in your years.

They are almost gone from my place this year. Earlier in the year the were all over my place. Tractor broke down and weeds grew and I hadn't seen one in weeks. Fixed the tractor and went to shred a few miles down the road and deer were everywhere. My place is cleaned up now and they are back on camera.

Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

Don't discount the drought either. There are many areas of the state that are going to have extremely low numbers of certain age classes of deer. I would imagine most 3, 4, and 5 year old classes are fairly light in overall age class numbers.

Agree with Leonardo on the drought.
