My brother and I went to New Mexico a few weeks ago. We had a great time as usual. Lots of fish and good food and times. He took his daughter who is 14 and she had a tough time but managed to land a few. When I showed my son the pictures he was wishing he could've went. I told him he needs to learn to flyfish first. So he's asked me every day to go and teach him. Yesterday I got home from work early and off we went to the Blanco river near my house. While I strung up the fly rod he skipped rocks. Man the Blanco is so clear I usually would never do this cause the fish are so wary. I just let him have fun. Wasn't there to fish as much as teach him.

Finally I had the fly rod ready. I figured I'd keep it simple and teach him to strip a fly in. I tied a wolly bugger on and showed him the action. So I explain how to keep the tip low and keep the line tight so you can feel the fish bite and how to strip set if you feel a fish. I back away to take a picture and he's strip setting. As I'm trying to explain not to do that unless you have a fish I see the rod bend. I couldn't beleive it.. These fish are so wary usually and I had been wading down there to show him what a fish feels like. He was fighting the fish and just beaming from ear to ear. Man it was so awesome.

That's what it's all about.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

So he's fighting and the fish is jumping and he forgets I'm ever there and he's talking to God and the fish.. And away he went. I quite on that note. He wanted more but I didn't want to over do it. Now he's really hungry. Next lesson will be actually casting...I hope it goes this well.

Looks like a fun time, leading to many more. Fly fishing is lots of fun and those small bass and pan fish can give lots of practice.

I've been know to take the fly rod out to the ranch and play with the bass and goggle eye's. Catch a 3 lb bass on a fly and your having some fun, two years ago caught a 7 lb channel cat that came up to hit a deer hair I'd tied to look like a dragon fly. The next day I tied 20 more just like it and use nothing else. Fly fishing for bass is a hoot.
Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

My grandfather taught me to fly fish. His teaching technique was interesting to say the least. He put a whole night crawler on #10 long shank cricket hook and told me to cast it. I couldn't tell you how many I threw off. Each lesson would end with me digging up more night crawlers. Once I could cast with out breaking them off he put on a big frog popper. Then the fun really began.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.
