Go to a store with a large selection of scopes. Look through a bunch in your price range. Some of them will appear more clear to your eyes. I would pick the one that is most clear, don't worry about the brand. If two or more different brands are equal then you might ask for opinions. Make sure the scopes are set on the same power and that you adjust the ocular on each scope so the reticle appears sharp. IMO a 3-9 or 3.5-10 with a 40MM objective will work for the vast majority of hunting situations, unless you are going after prairie dogs. Reticle is a matter of personal preference.

Probably not even worth that. Worst new scope I've seen

I'd look for a used VX- or Vari-X III in a 3.5-10x. Great scopes.

I'd also go with a dual dovetail mount and rings.

Just got a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 for $350 on SWFAs sample list. Demo A so practically NIB. Normally goes for $469. Can't beat that!

the 3-9x40 size would be my suggestion. As for brands, wow, does that open a can of worms.
Some I've had in that price range that I would have again:
Minox
Vortex
Burris
Bushnell

These just to name a few.
Some I've had that I would NOT have again:
Simmons
Tasco
Any of the no-name cheapo crap

The suggestion to check out SWFA's sample list is a good one as is keeping an eye out on the trading post here.

I've got two of these scopes. Pretty darn good for the price point. I don't have them on hunting rifles, but I think they would be fine for that unless you're hunting thick stuff with extremely close shots.

The base Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 from EuroOptic for $329 is a **great** scope. I have one and it compares very well to the competition.

Recently saw a Crossfire II 4x12x44 at CameraLand for $140 on their demo deal, for a low cost functional scope with a lifetime no fault warranty. CL also had a selection of Minox ZA3 3x9's at $150, including a 3x9x50 that'd be worth looking at in that price range. I'd also find a set of steel Warne Rings for that Venture, and change out the aluminium Weaver bases for some steel ones too.
