It has been a while since I got a hog down in Bosque County, Texas. The oats were harvested and they keep rotating cattle between pastures and the cattle keep getting the corn from my feeder. So I have been left to random stalking areas where I think hogs might be and that hasn't proven terribly fruitful on the 1200 acres. So this week, I thought I would try calling coyotes and maybe a hog would walk by, maybe. That didn't work out at all. After 2 hours, the only hogs I had seen was a sow and two piglets that were in the pasture when I arrived in the truck, but they disappeared pretty quick. I headed back to the truck to drop off the calling gear and get some water and then planned to stalk the areas around the bottoms and west pasture. Low and behold, there were hogs only about 150 yards beyond my truck! I dropped my unnecessary (noisy) gear in the road and made the approach to my truck. The wind was in my favor, but the dry, crunchy grass made a LOT of noise and so I didn't make it very far beyond my truck before setting up to shoot. I shot 3 hogs, the first hog being hit twice that I heard, but he managed to get away. So no information on him. This happened before the DVR spooled up and was recording. That was my mistake. The next two hogs I picked up on the run, the first dropping in place (liver and heart damage) and the second managing about 70 yards (liver and lung damage). No bullets were recovered on these two because of overpenetration. As my buddy, HuntTxHogs, has pointed out to me, Grendel velocity may be a bit low for Hornady GMX ammo (citing Chuck Hawks), failing to get the full potential out of it. I have a few more rounds to try and see if the results are duplicated. ( http://www.chuckhawks.com/hornady_GMX_bullets.htm) Without recovering the boar shot before the DVR was spooled up, won't know the bullet performance on him and he was the only real chance for bullet recovery given his size. Still, a good hunt, lots of walking, and a couple good (confirmed) kills with the bonus 4 embryos.

I love the fact that all DNS's testing and information is saving fellow hunters untold amounts of time and money!
That boar was a Haus - wish you had brought him down for the report .
This space is For Sale - inquire within ...

P_P, I looked for him for nearly an hour. I don't know what went wrong. The first shot was into the shoulder and the 2nd shot into the rump as he ran away. I doubt the 2nd shot did a whole lot, but it was the only shot I had to stop him. I am guessing I only lunged him and maybe only one lung, allowing for him to cover a lot of ground.
After the blood trail stopped, I searched a fan shaped area from that point. There are a lot of limestone boulders out there that look like downed pigs. It is very frustrating.

DNS I gotta ask what type of business you are in. You spend an significant amount of time out at night and I'm jealous. I'm saving for a thermal but will not have the access to property you have. My lease is 4 hours away so a quick night run is not an option. Either way, great videos and reports.

LOL, I got lucky and was able to retire early. As for being out at night, was diagnosed with skin cancer several years ago. Being out at night is the one time I can be outdoors and not worry so much about additional problems. You will still see me quite covered up in long sleeves and long pants regardless of how hot it is when hunting, particularly if I am starting my hunt in daylight hours. The cancer thing was really a two-edged sword. It is a very real health risk, but at the same time, it got my wife on board with the notion of me being out at night to hunt.

Ahh, very well. Kicking cancers a$$ and killing pigs at the same time. Strong work! I might have to retire to get the funds for a thermal the way my wife spends my discretionary funds.
