I know some people like to skip dog work while dove hunting due to the heat and other hazards (snakes) to wait till it gets colder for duck/quail etc.

I will be hunting my lab on opening weekend which will be her third opener.... She has been going out with me since she was 6 months old and don't see much of a reason to change now.

Will y'all be hunting your dogs or having them skip out on the fun?

Depends on the situation whether I will take my dog. A seasoned dog should have no issues as long as you watch the heat and have plenty of water.

However plenty of people screw up by taking a young dog dove hunting. Large fields, thick cover, multiple guns, heat, snakes ect.. can sure make it difficult first experience.

I take my gsp but just make sure I'm able to keep her from overheating.

Always. It would be hard for me to imagine Dove hunting without a dog.

I hunted my 6 month old pup last year and saw no problem. I hunt over a stock pond and in the shade, so I don't see heat as a major problem. I wouldn't take the dogs out to a field without water, though...just too dang hot for my taste.

I've hunted my lab for just about all 10 seasons she's been alive. Always have water, sit in the shade and know when to hold them back or call it quits.

If I'm not hunting a tank I bring 2 coolers. One iced down with beer and a big one full of water for her to sit in while not retrieving.

Buster is going along with a big cooler full of water for him. 1 year old cocker. Will be his first hunt. We will be done in an hour in the morning opening week each day. So he won't get too hot. He has had his snake vaccine too. All I'm going to have to worry about with him is him bringing me other peoples birds. roflmao

Penny is not quite ready. She's going to be slow going with a gun and opening day is not a good time for that.

Yep, but but will need to work in conditioning her over the next few weeks.
Plus will most likely hunt her in the AM only because she is getting up there in years.

Like others, hard to imagine going bird hunting with the dog. The place I hunt has a water trough close by so she get in it
about every half hour or so.

Just make sure your dog is trained and will obey.....

Nothing is more embarrassing than to spend the whole day wondering where your mutt is, yelling HERE _____ till you pass out.

It makes other hunters mad even though they will never say anything.

then,, don't kill your poor dog who is not in condition and will hunt his/her azz off doing what they love, only to find themselves trying to survive heatstroke caused by their dumbazz owners who think the have a "hunting" dog.

Now this rant being over, I've taken my dogs in the past, had great success and fun.

just be smart.

It is special to hunt with a well trained retriever. As far as the heat goes, try to hunt at sunrise and finish by mid-morning.

You need to package that with snake avoidance training to prevent dog from getting bit in the first place, see link below training this weekend...Keep in mind, if your dog gets bit by a rattler, the vacine just buys you time to rush dog to the vet, probably emergence if on the weekend, dog still may not survive, and you are in for long recovery and huge vet bill. I used to hunt my lab for dove when she was young, and started skipping out when she got older. I think if you hunt out west vs rest of Texas makes a big difference as far as risk of gitting bit goes.

I bring my dog, but really try to limit them.

No running around during down time, or long difficult retrieves. I also only have them retrieve my birds or one or 2 other folks.

I also deny a lot of retrieves too, and I'll pick up the easy ones. Plus, many times I'll have him walk at heel with me to the area of fall and then have him "hunt it up". This Helps with obedience and overheating issues.

Shade and lots of drinking water available is a must

I usually just hunt in one of the pastures at home the first few weeks of the season and I will hunt both of my labs. On a morning hunt I'll hunt them both together so they can work on honoring each other for duck season. Afternoons if we aren't sitting on the porch under the mister I'll hunt one at a time and if one starts getting hot swap him out with his brother. We're lucky to get 10 birds in a full days hunt - so they don't get much work, but it beats sitting in the house.

It's hard to leave the dog at home. I normally always take mine, mornings are best, those afternoons can be brutally hot. Always make sure I take plenty of water for me and the dog. Never push him hard, kinda let him hunt at his own pace when it is hot. I'm a lot easier on him during these times, vs duck season where I cut him no slack.

We don't duck hunt or goose hunt. My younger Visla/Lab started conditioning a couple weeks ago. My 9.5 year old lab won't go until it cools off.

If I'm shooting birds, the dogs are there.

That is a beautiful picture of your dog. You ever thought about framing it
