A few years ago I took over the management of the wildlife on my ranch. Previous management decisions mostly involved cashing a check and if it is brown, it is down. I had no background at all in wildlife management but the one idea that I carried forward from a lifetime in the cattle business was that if I could provide a good healthy environment for my doe herd, the horns would follow. It was the blind leading the blind and mistakes were made. My first feeding station lasted almost two weeks before a Brahma cow destroyed it. The second attempt is ugly but still up. You learn as you go. Just as we thought progress was being made, along came the Year from Hell. We hauled both feed and water almost daily to strategic locations across the ranch. We lost most of the fawn crop that year but were able to save the core breeding stock. It was a setback but we emerged from the disaster with a core breeding stock of survivors. Some of our neighbors wildlife was decimated. We survived, the herd survived and the generation of deer that we are seeing today is the product of our work. Born and raised on the ranch during our program. Low fence wildlife management where you have no control over genetics requires patience, patience and more patience. These are my guys! I think it is working!

My part of the country doesnt have the genetics to make the front page but it sure makes an old man happy when he can honestly say that he has made a difference.and I think we have.

Always rewarding to see the results of your work and effort. Congrats and keep at it. The last couple of years have been good years and with a growing population, should be a great year up

Great pic, deer, and outlook. Hope they keep looking up into the future.

We don't all have unlimited feed budgets, brought in genetics, or high fences with extensive culling programs. Good work, as good as the last few years have been, there were some pretty tuff ones before it.
