By no means do I consider myself a well rounded, experienced, or skilled bow hunter. Yet I have taken a few animals with a bow now and none of those have ever been when I was using scent control of any kind. I just played the wind. Last year I didn't even buy any scent control products and had no problems filling the freezer. Whats yalls opinion on these products and do you use them?

I think most of the time we go overboard on on using cover scents. If the scents are not native to the area it is just as bad as them smelling us. I have even been busted when trying to use doe in heat. Just us a good de-scent on you and your clothes and always hunt the wind.

My guy in Kansas will boil up cedar needles and the berries, strain off and put in a spray bottle. I have used it with great success.
I'm looking into Ozonics for this year. Lot of great reviews for this device.

I am meticulous in my attempt at scent control. Hell, I quit wearing cologne a month before deer season!

I shower with scent free soap all of deer season and wear scent free deodorant all of deer season. I wash my regular clothes in scent free detergent as well as my hunting clothes.

I keep my hunting clothes in scent control bags and use rubber gloves to put them in the bags after taking them out of the dryer.
I only put my clothes on in the field as I am walking to the stand. I then spray down. I only spray down with Dead Down Wind. I have tried other brands and have been busted a lot with other brands. DDW seems to provide the most success.

Finally, I attempt to always hunt the wind. That doesn't always happen though. When I am in KS, I am there for a limited amount of days so Im going to hunt as much as possible and sometimes the wind isn't exactly right for where I am sitting. Like I said, I try to avoid it but sometimes I cant.

With all of this being said, I'd be willing to wager that I sit in a tree more often than most folks on the bow hunting section. Like I said, most...not all. I know when it comes down to it, there is no way to eliminate human odor but if my actions give me just a 1% increase in advantage then Im going to do it.

Looking back at comments, they seem ridiculous!!!!

I general buy the cheapest scent spray that's about it, generally don't have any problem filling freezer. I have to admit I did buy everything on the shelve at one time, but as time went on each year I would buy less each year.

I use scent free detergent and soap year round. During hunting season I use scent control products. Playing the wind isn't possible in most places when you hunter feeders. The deer come from multiple directions and there are always one or multiple down wind. Deer are relatively easy to deal with. Pigs on the other hand are nearly impossible.

I keep all my hunting clothes in a plastic bin, cut some cedar branches and put them in the bottom. In no time at all my clothes smell like cedar. I also use scent free soap and deodorant and try to take a shower before the evening hunt.

Adult late onset hunter. Why did I wait so long to get started?

I like this as well. Unfortunately the cows are gone on our place July through December.

I just spray generously and let dry before packing into my "hunting clothes" bag or before the hunt and dry clothes in scent-less dryer sheets. confused2
Only issue I had was with a bad/defective bottle of Dead Down Wind, where the bottle smelled BAD instead of like nothing, like usual. Didn't realize it and instead of clear liquid it was colored. That kept the red deer and axis away from my bow blind, so that sucked, otherwise would've killed a big 'un.
Stick with the Scent Killer, dunno about the Primos or Under Armour stuff.

Nose Jammer, Ozonics????

I just hunt the wind, no scent control. Don't see anything wrong with someone using it but until they make one that can fool my dogs nose, I won't try another one.

With no scent control, wearing the same boots that I wear in daily life, wearing clothes that are washed in normal detergent...I have also had deer walk down wind and not react. I don't use that as an indicator.

Read this article (and the ones linked) and it totally made me change the way I think.

It really, really IS all about wind direction.....

Nope. It's not. When you sit in a stand and the deer come in from 6 different trails, some of them down wind, you had better know how to use a good scent control system.

A deer is not impossible to get by on. They are adapted to living around people. The rancher, hunters in and around filling feeders and even folks out for walks. If you can minimize your scent foot print and dilute it with the right cover scent then the deer may smell human scent but not at a level that triggers his alarm and flight response.

You have to hunt the wind. I do not care how much you spend on anti scent stuff, they can smell what comes out of you lungs. Even if you chew some of that goofy gum.

I have deer like passthru. Our deer come to a feeder downwind. So just saying hunt the wind isn't enough.

I treat my clothes with the UV killer spray when I first buy them and then use all that scent control soaps and scent-lok stuff and even an ozonics in my blind. It helps but they still get wind that you have at least been in the area at some point. Pigs are a whole different story and an ozonics won't even work on them. Last year we tried it out while hog hunting 3 different times and they could either pick up on the small sound of the fan or could wind us. Once we stopped using the ozonics the pigs came right in. The guy at the bow zone also told me that he didn't have any luck with it on hogs. Down here the woods are thick and it's sometimes hard to play the wind. When I lived up north and would hunt in NH it was a lot easier to play the wind because the woods are thinned out making it easy to get around quietly. I was able to stalk deer with my recurve bow and get within 20 yards of them for a shot. Where I hunt here in Centerville you can't even get 5 feet without hitting a briar patch or some thick brush so a blind is the best option.
