Simple question but for me it’s not an easy answer. I suppose most of the folks on this forum are hunters so my question is really this. When you're day dreaming about hunting or just being outdoors where is it that you’re mind takes you to?
I seem to always go back in my mind to a place I hunted many times but have not seen in over 10 years. SE of Lake City, Colorado in GMU 66 is a park or meadow that runs southwest to northeast. It’s about 5 miles long and opens up above timberline at about 11,300 ft and on the other end it is swallowed by a large stand of aspens and lodgepole pines at about 9000 ft. The park is about a 1000 yards across at it’s widest point and narrows to probably 150 yards at several pinch points.
Sitting on this tree line as the stars melt into daylight is something that I’ll carry to my grave. Just watching the mountains wake up for so many mornings is one of the gift’s God has blessed me with.I’m not likely to ever see this spot again but it will remain with me forever.
So I ask you again…… Where’s your spot?

Mine is north of Laurel Hill, FL. That is the last place I ever got to go deer hunting with my father before I lost him to lung cancer. I seem to think of that trip an awful lot. dad and i hunted all over the place including a couple of African trips but the last trip lingers in my mind the most. Dad got this buck on that trip and less than 15 months later he was gone.

So I ask you again…… Where’s your spot? I think your spot got posted on here at the end of last year... My spot is in the neighboring unit looking down at Blue Mesa but being able to see the rolling hills all the way down to Lagarita & San Luis Peak.

From my spot near Baldy Cinco I can see into the north side of unit 76 towards Creede. Beautiful country!!!

One of two spots. First would be in the panhandle. Stand overlooking a small tank, cedar break and wheat field. Panhandle sunset out of that stand was something to behold. Second would be Jack county. Buddy had a large pasture with a couple large oaks in it overlooking a small plateau. Sitting under one of those oaks is a memory for me that is peaceful.

Our lease in Refugio county, watching the sunrise through the mesquites is almost a religious experience. If not religious it sure is peaceful and makes me feel closer to GOD.

In Texas it has to be just below the observatory north of Ft. Davis on hwy.118.

Watching sunrise/sunset on my high line through my lease. just a ton of good memories. I catch myself daydreaming of sitting there just watching the day go by.

In Texas it has to be just below the observatory north of Ft. Davis on hwy.118. I shot at numerous times and missed the largest Mule Deer I have ever seen on the Carracas Mesa many years ago.

I have too many to list, but here's a couple: Ridge in the wilderness outside of Dubois WY where I killed my first elk (thanks Toepuncher for giving me the photo):  Rock Creek, MT - where our cabin and some of the best trout fishing in the world is:

I would love to re-live this hunt, but this is the memory etched in my mind. I'll never forget the sounds of the horses as we rode before sunup, climbing, and knowing we were right in the middle of famous, well known big buck country.

My place right now is my former lease just west of Graford where my son killed his first deer. However, I'm about to head out to Alaska to visit him and my DIL, and I'll be hunting Sitka Blacktail deer while I'm there. I'm pretty sure I'll have a new place by the time I get back.

Believe it or not, Yuma Arizona with my fellow Marines John and Fred. We'd wrangle orders there during the seasons. Dove and Gamble's quail in the arroyos east of Yuma and in the orange groves was just friggin' awesome. We were out of 29 Stumps but the old man was a hunter and would cut us orders to MCAS Yuma or YPG to save us a few bucks. Duck hunting over Lake Martinez was incredible. Good numbers of ducks and it wasn't freezing cold! Duck hunted in t-shirt and shorts in December-January many times. I put in for an antelope draw every year I was out that way. The one year I got drawn I was playing in the sandbox. Got my tag and package in the mail about three weeks after the season closed. That hurt a bit.
