Great picture. I think its the quail chicks that are a risk.

Although I agree, I wouldn't post it on the interweb. Chicks and eggs are the ones at risk.

we shoot every one we see on our quail lease. Actually road runners eat a lot of stuff that preys on quail, mainly snakes, small rodents. Their impact on the quail population is minimal. My guess is overall they are a plus rather than a minus as far as quail populations are concerned. I'd rather have a few piasanos around that a lot more snakes and rats.

Saved this guy from a road runner yesterday at big lake. I like quail and horned lizards more than I like RR's. He was picking at the toad and the toad was standing real tall and rocking back and forth in a real menacing way. Never seen one act that way before, but I've never seen one attacked before either. Just took the toad a few hundred yards down the road and turned him loose.

We have lots of road runners and lots of quail.
Ive been told I'm wrong many times, but the common factor I see most often when I see quail is no fire ants.

Shooting RR's is dumb. They are cool and good to have around. We have a LOT of RR's and a LOT of quail.

http://hosted.verticalresponse.com/538021/8462e880c9/1550501939/bbf8bbb1bb/"Besides raccoons, other nest predators caught with their "paw in the cookie jar" at the San Angelo site included gray foxes, striped skunks, bobcats and opossums. Some unexpected nest predators included turkey vultures, woodrats, golden-fronted woodpeckers and even a tom turkey! Artificial nests at another study site near Albany recorded feral hogs, raccoons and crows as "common thieves." It's also interesting to note that roadrunners, which are often maligned as being "hard on quail nests" were not incriminated during our studies. Roadrunners were photographed at nests on several occasions, but they never destroyed any (chicken) eggs." "From our findings, raccoons are the major egg predator in the western Edwards Plateau. Also, snakes may be getting an undeservingly bad "rap" about their importance as an egg predator. And roadrunners were exonerated of any wrongdoing, at least in our studies."

we shoot every one we see on our quail lease. I wouldn't put that on here. In the eyes of the law its the same as shooting a hawk or bald eagle. Plus just about everything wild in a pasture will eat quail eggs or baby quail you cant shoot all of them. At least roadrunners eat a lot of snakes. More than they eat quail.

When I was a kid out in the Permian basin area in the 60s and 70s if you seen a rr there would be a covey of blues within 75 yds every time they seemed to target the quail.

Not really, What is the fine for shooting a roadrunner... What is the time (and fine) for shooting a bald eagle... I am actually surprised that the greater roadrunner made the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of protected birds. I didn't know they were migratory. Probably made the list for protection purposes.
