Looking for something that with a few upgrades I can have an entry level PRS type rifle. Since I'm a lefty there aren't many options because the Tikka CTR and Ruger Precesion don't come in left hand models . The Remington varmint 243 comes with a 1:9.25 twist 24 inch barrel which should stabilize 95-105 grain bullets. I can install a new trigger and drop it in a different stock with DBM and as funds come available swap the barrel out . I really like Tikkas but they don't have any left hand models in a desirable caliber and twist rate that would work for a short while until I can afford the barrel swap. Remingtons also have more upgrades available new and used. So is the Remington a good choice ? What say you?

It'll get you going. I've been there, and got something "close". Bottom metal swap, then stock swap, then traveled. Shot the barrel out, and sold the whole thing. Then built what I wanted in the first place, and am perfectly content with it. I spent more money in the long run than if I would have built what I wanted in the first place. And it is built on a Tikka action, which has shot many matches with zero breakdowns.

Don't put a Jewel trigger in the Remington, they're usually the ones breaking down when they get dirty. Timneys have proven to be more reliable from what I've witnessed.

IMO, the 1:9.25 twist is too slow for the 105's.

Cattleman, I started with a plain Jane 700 ADL varmint in .243....swapped out the trigger w Timney, new stock and bottom metal. Had the bbl lapped before taking it to Chad for load work up....he loaded 87 gr. VLD's and shot 1/2 MOA with it.....I'm still trying to keep that 5th shot in line. I would think an SPS would be fine w/out having to swap the bbl out.

Jewells break from pierced or blown primers 99% of the time. If you have enough dirt to be an issue the timney will fail too.

The factory 243 should stabilize the 105gr Amax which while not ideal will work for the life of the barrel. Pushing it faster will stabilize it a bit better but Texas club matches limit you to 3100fps and big prs limit is 3200fps.

Not doubting you, but I have not seen that. Every time I've seen a Jewel break down, there were several Timneys shooting in the same conditions that kept on running.

I'd put money on a primer being pierced or blown at some point in it's life of it went down. There are rare occasions that one of all manufacturers go down due to defect though. I've run Jewells for 7yrs in all types of conditions with no issues. I treat them the same as all triggers and flush them out once a year or after really nasty conditions.

Match you shot last weekend is always good for a Jewel going down, seen it at every big match, a trigger quits, and about every time it's a Jewel.

Chad was going to come shoot with me two weeks ago but said he had his trigger out of the rifle he wanted to bring. I asked why, he said it broke down and needs cleaning and inspection. I asked "is it a Jewel?" Chad answered "of course".

Where do we get that mentality of the trigger?

Just saying between myself and a few friends we have a minimum 15 Jewells and none have went down. Several ride in a farm truck year round with no cleaning.

I guess rifle matches have gremlins that get involved.

You also see almost 3 Jewells to any other 1 brand. The last precision rifle blog shows 40 Jewells to 15 timney which was the second most used.

Mine have been perfect through 2 of the worst matches concerning equipment.
