alright boys and girls need ya'll opinions or past experiences.

we are cutting in 3 new plots this year. 2, oats and 1 brassica. we worked over winter to get some trees cleared out and now we're ready to start prepping the land. my question to ya'll is..... would ya'll spray the area first with Roundup ( grass/weed killer) then come back and plow in a few weeks OR plow 1st then spray right after plowing and come back in a few weeks and plow again??

my thought is plow then spray that way you can get to more of the exposed roots and smaller trash that your sprayer wouldn't hit? either way we plan on disc-ing 3 times before we plant in mid September. i'm just trying to figure out the best way to get the area prepped for the purest food plot.

thanks for ya'lls advice in advance

There's another thread on this where BayouGuy makes some good suggestions. I would spray now; you want those plants dying ASAP, in my opinion.

Plot thread

If the weeds are really tall, you likely need to shred it first.

IMO, if you can disc the heck out of it in this dry heat, you wont need herbicide. As mentioned, if it is tall, shred it and best if you could plow it, then disc smooth. May be a good time to get a soil sample in as well.

If the grass and weeds are still green, especially if it pretty thick, you will have better luck spraying first and the come back in a couple of weeks and then disc. I have found that is hard to get a disc to cut down thru thick green stuff and make dent in the ground.

I thought about disking my food plot yesterday. Checked the thermometer, grabbed some sweet tea and sat back down on the porch. It's too hot, too dry and too soon. Wait until September to get started.

Herbicides work in one of two ways - pre and post-emergence. One is applied to the soil in the early spring to keep seeds from germinating, while the other is sprayed on the leaves and absorbed by growing plants to kill down to the root.

As someone has pointed out, you can repeatedly disk and area, but this is typically started in the late winter months. The idea here is that by repeatedly unearthing the vegetation, you eventually reach the point where you have ended life cycle of everything that was growing in the plot.

Most people just wait until the Fall and spray their plots to kill everything in them before disking and planting. With the end of the growing season for warm weather plants right around the corner, the re-emergence of grass and weeds should be minimal.

I like to mow my plots about a month before planting. Two weeks later when the cuttings have decayed and the grass and weeds have gotten some new growth on them, I hit them with a good post-emergence herbicide like Roundup or equivalent. Then I give them another two weeks to die and decay before disking and planting.

This is what I do also, and I get so good results. Here is a photo of my oat plot last year.

There is also much to said for placing a small, circle-shaped section of fence in your plot so you can see how much growth the deer have consumed during and after the season.

Dan has a good plan. This is what I recommend to most of my customers. If you don't have rain in the forcast for awhile you can shred it and most everything will die out. Then you can go back and spray a couple weeks before plowing. If you need any additional info you can always email me and if be happy to help you out.

I'll have some good deals on fall plot mixes this year as well if you haven't made a decision on what to plant yet.

Whats growing there now? only grasses/weeds?
If you have any woody-stem brush & such may wanna spot-hit them with something a little stronger than plain diluted roundup so you can get those deep brush roots killed that will survive discing . . .

You are going to need remedy to take care of the bushes. 2-4-d is not going to touch the grass or bushes. Just FYI .

Yep, listen to what Decker said...2,4-D is a broad leaf herbicide.
