I just started hunting two young females along with three pretty good broke dogs. I am hunting mornings in the daylight and it has not rained in over a month and temperatures at or above 100 degrees on the high side and about 75 on the lows. The pups are hunting their tails off but conditions are just too tough for them to be able to trail. They had no problem finding skunks as they bayed two up yesterday morning. Nothing like starting the day with the sweet aroma of a skunk filling the air. Adios,
Gary

Do you find the dogs are done for the day, once they get sprayed? Not able to scent with the skunk in their nose?

NewGulf, we began airing July 1 on Pursuit Channel. Same time slots and same sponsors, thank goodness that nothing changes much as I am too old for much change. 11:30 PM Friday nights, 12:30 PM on Saturdays and 6:00 PM on Sundays.
poisonivie, believe it or not, the stink does not seem to affect them. I have had them get sprayed in the face and five minutes later take a coon or cat track and trail it with ease. Lions really love skunks and many will have the stink on them which might actually help the dogs to trail him. If the dog has the skunk scent on it, he might not be able to pick up the smell of skunk on the lion but he will be able to smell the lion.
Hunted this morning and my two gyps found two more skunks and the carcass of a dead, stinking porcupine. Of course, they had to roll in it and ended up with quills all in them. Luckily they were not driven in deep as the porcupine was not pushing them.
Adios,
Gary

Gary, what kind of pups are you running. I was up there last week and it was plenty hot.

Registered blueticks. I have been breeding this line of dogs for over 20 years. Dogs don't have to be registered to be good hunters but I am firm believer in genetics and unless I have a pedigree on a dog, not sure what was back there several generations.
If a guy is doing the right thing in his breeding program, your dogs should improve with every generation. Knock on wood, my dogs do seem to be getting better from a hunting standpoint but I am having a more difficult time improving confirmations.
Adios,
Gary
