Was thinking about this last night. Let assume you needed a 45 and an AR, because who doesn't - right? I lean more towards nicer 1911's and lower end AR's. If I only had one of each and was buying new I'd have to go with a Colt 1911 and PSA AR. I'd think most people would lean the same way. Just curios.
$500 1911 and $1000 AR
or
$1000 1911 and $500 AR

Which one are you going to shoot more? Which one will you be betting your life on to function? Answer those questions, and I think you have your answer.

I shoot both types pretty regularly and am comfortable using either if need be. 1911's are kind of like bolt rifles and shotguns as in I like them to be a little better quality. That is just me though.

$1000 1911 and $500-600 AR.
In my experience, there are a lot of $500 1911s that have issues, and a lot of $500-600 ARs that function perfectly.
It will be easy to find a $1000 1911 (Colt, Springfield, etc) that will function very very reliably. I got my TRP for $1050, and brother got his TRP for $1000, fwiw.

I'd go with a Rock Island VZ Tactical. A nice 1911 for the money. It has a good trigger. I would upgrade the sights.
And I agree on the AR selection. Maybe with an upgraded trigger and CHF Barrel( my preference) and some kind of illuminated reticle optic.
I would tend to go higher quality on the ar. And to me higher quality isnt about the name on the AR but the parts you run inside.

$ 750.00 for each seems like your best approach - dunno it's my 3rd grade math education kicking in here...
Why split hairs for $ 250.00 either way?

I'd spend more on the 1911. My next AR needs to be budget, with irons or a red dot, for banging around in the truck or on the ATV.

I'd spend $1000 on the 1911 and $500 on AR. Then hold on to the AR until the next AWB scare. Then you can sell it and you'll have $1000 to spend on an AR once the scare is over.

Where does a person find those $500 AR-15s. I see $650 but haven't seen any for $500. Talking today, not years ago. No joke, where does one find the $500 rifles?

No joke, where does one find the $500 rifles? http://www.primaryarms.com/am15/p/am15/For me it would be even cheaper because they are physically located in Pearland. I would definitely spend more on the 1911 than the ar assuming they are "used equally," whatever that may mean to you. But also agree with fireman in that I'd lean towards one if u plan on shooting one significantly more than the other. Finally, I think I'd do more of a $800/$700 split for it. In your shoes, I'd get the cheapest Sig I could find, get any cheap ar, get a decent trigger and spend the remaining on some sight/optic for the ar. https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/mobi...ant_8+1_45acp_5
