I don't like a thumbhole. But do like a vertical grip. I put my thumb on top of the tang, or beside the tang. If my thumb were inside a thumb hole I have to remove it to cycle the bolt. If I kept my thumb completely out of the thumbhole, I wouldn't have as good of a grip on the rifle, and what would be the point in the thumbhole?
Just my take, everyone has their likes and dislikes.

The manners t5 allows for either thumbhole or thumb over tang style shooting.

Im same as FG. Dislike thumbholes, like vertical grips. I have a hard time shooting traditional rifles now.

Bell and Carlson makes some good vertical grip stocks with a fat palmswell for $270, I've also ran the Boyd's pro varmint which is the same shape just wood instead of fiberglass. Around $120. Sand your barrel channel down to free float and it should shoot great.

If you shoot a 700 I have an extra pro varmint laying around I'd let go cheap. Accuracy didn't really get better or worse when I switched to the b&c but damn that red and black web looks good.

One more thing.
If the thumbhole is the angled kind, like a wood stock, it is very difficult, sometimes impossible, to shoot the rifle with the other hand. So if a person has a thumbhole stock set up for right handed, but come into a situation where they need to shoot left handed, they are at a disadvantage.
A friend of mine had a Thompson with a thumbhole stock, and he asked me to work up a load for it. I could not shoot it left handed. So I had to work up a load right handed, and therefore right eye, even though I am left eye dominant.

If you want a wood stock, I'd look at Boyds.

thanks guys, I don't have the money for a Manners, any thoughts on the Magpul hunter stock? You need to handle one of the Magpul stocks before you buy it. I have one on my 10/22 and it's great for a cheap plinker. If you're looking in that price range, what about an Iota or Grayboe for a little bit more $?

after checking prices I'm thinking of another B&C in vertical style grip. I have two others in the M40 style stock and really like them. That Magpul is Not cheap! I'm using Wyatts bottom metal and mags so maybe stay with that setup.
