How low can a 12 volt battery be before it is bad and a waste of time to recharge. I have noticed some can be charged but they don't always hold the charge.

Depends on the battery, if it doesn't hold it it's trash. I just picked up two for $9.88 each from Cabelas.

Ours last about 3 years and we use them 24 7 365 with a solar charger. The cells end up drying up and then they get ruined from charging while being dry.
You can try to add water to them and it may fix them. Search YouTube on how to fix sealed lead acid batteries.

What I have found is that quicker you get it recharged after it is drained the better it takes a charge. If it is drained completely it might not take a full charge or last as long the next time. Weather conditions at the time it is drained greatly effect it also. Best thing I found is to keep a spare and change out the battery needing a charge after a month or two when it is not fully drained. You get much longer life out of both batteries that way.
Are idiots multiplying faster than normal people?

Have a few that are out 24/7 365 days a year. They are on solar chargers, and usually I will pull them and charge on a wall charger once or twice a year. Some have been out 5 years and going strong.
Get a good charger and try not to drain them and they will last much longer.
It's hell eatin em live

I've had batteries last two or three years with proper solar upkeep then I've had batteries get low and never hold a a charge over half a season or between feeder fillings it's a toss up, buy a volt meter if it doesn't hold a 12 + charge after a day off the charger and sitting chunk it

Repetitively discharging below about 10.45v will severely shorten a batteries life (reduce it's capacity to hold a full charge). Also, a discharged battery subject to a freeze (below 32) can be 'killed' immediately (will freeze & swell plates damaging it permanently), and an 'OLD' battery can be killed immediately with a deep discharge.
Good quality battery is designed to 'last' about 1000 or so discharge (to about 20%) /charge (to full) cycles ( or about 3-4 years); but this is substantially shortened if battery 'abused' (discharged below 10.45/20%, overcharged, etc). Fully charge a NEW battery THEN put a solar cell on to maintain it (keep it topped off) for maximum life (4-5 years!!) ; use charger again if solar fails to keep it at 95%.
Battery condition can be determined with a proper 'battery load tester' (which puts a measured load that matches battery design); a volt-meter alone won't tell you much about the batteries internal condition (ability to hold/provide amp-hours over time).

If its a 12v battery don't take it down below 12V (40%), fully charged it should meter about 12.8V. The deeper the discharge between charges the shorter the life, small solar panel is the best solution.
