Rifle Threading for a suppressor #6373278 07/18/16 07:06 PM

I just had my Ruger M77 threaded for my harvester 30 suppressor.

The rifle is a .280 and has the stock pencil barrel. I wanted to thread the barrel at 5/8 but the barrel was to thin at the crown and the gunsmith did 1/2" threads.

I'm concerned about swelling at the bore and its adverse effect on the accuracy of this rifle with the 1/2" thread pattern.

Are my concerns warranted?

That is a really thin wall thickness at the muzzle.

That's what I'm afraid of. The gunsmith assured me that it wouldn't be a problem, but I'm just seeing if anyone else had any experiences with it.

If it doesn't shot well, I guess I'll just chop it off and recrown it.

Can you have the smith cut it down to the thicker part of the barrel? I have a 700 CDL in 243 cut down to 18" to have enough meat to hold a harvester.

I'd be more concerned about something shifting and baffle striking your can.

Plus you'll have to buy the 1/2" adapter for the harvester

Roughly the same situation here ~.620" barrel at the muzzle -- SiCo has the perfect solution to the problem though. They make a 9/16 (Major = .5625" vs the .625 on a 5/8 thread) brake and flash hider that's fully compatible with the Harvest/Omega/etc

So the gunsmith you paid to thread the muzzle told you it would be fine...you went ahead and got the work done but now validating with all the internet gunsmiths as to whether it will work? confused2

Shoot it and see if the gun will shoot...don't expect to not have to tune a load to the added weight on the barrel though.

Good luck.

If the bore is ~.284 and the threading is 1/2" (or .500"), then that leaves .216" total. Each side of the barrel is ~.108" thick on a 7mmm barrel. That's not very much.

IMO, the smarter threading size would have been to go 9/16". This gives you about half for threading, and half for shoulder support of the suppressor. 9/16" is .5625". The barrel is 7mm, or .284. Subtract the 2, and you get .2785". This puts you about half way between each, and .139" thickness on each side.

Most standard sporter rifle barrels (#2 contour) need to be threaded 9/16", and the caliber is larger than about 6.5mm or 7mm.

I would rather do it 9/16 in that occasion but we have done plenty 7 mags in the 1/2 by the time you put the adaptor/ suppressor on it you should have plenty of structure there. The small barrels were never really intended to be threaded so in ether case you are making lemonade but the 9/16 is sweeter.

With the can in place, there's another "ring of steel" - and I for one would rest easy on that account.

On the other hand, I would be careful about not letting the gun fall over, etc..

Another tack would be to reduce the barrel length so that it winds up being threaded in a thicker spot. A lot of hunters having a can put on reduce the barrel somewhat.

People do it might not be the best case scenario but a lot of guys are getting away with it. I've got a 7mag that's 1/2x28 and its fine. I just wouldn't shoot it unless you have something screwed on over the threads( muzzle brake, supressor, thread protector)

When we get a skinny barrel and the customer has a suppressor with 5/8-24 threads........
Turn the muzzle to max diameter it will clean up to.
Make a piece that slips over and is large enough to give a good shoulder, silver solder.
Turn to concentric with bore, thread, taper to look pretty..

And you have big threads on a skinny barrel.

A heavy suppressor on a thin barrel can do odd things, sometimes they shoot better, sometimes not.
