Some people don't sit and wait, instead they are opportunistic. So one could get into close quarter with hogs. It's nice to have a low low-end when that happens. It's also nice to have some magnification for the 100-300 yards shots on the same vermin. 1-6X is perfect, in my opinion.

Why do some people still run irons on lever actions and ARs?

And those people are awfully rare. Most folks are going to be hunting hogs from a stand.

A 3-9 or 3-12 + iron sights mounted at a 45* angle would be a good compromise.

I don't know of the "most" you speak of. I know of a whole bunch that travel on a UTV with thermals, and lights looking for hogs. I know zero that wait from a stand. I have nothing bad to say about a 2.5-10x, 3-9x, or 3-12x, but it's odd to find you telling a 1-6x is more for combat. OK, call it combat on hogs, they all need to die, whatever means necessary.
