Some of y'all might know from the OT that my dad has Pancreatic cancer, as part of his testament he had a port put in on his right side chest. He is right handed so that pretty much eliminated all hunting for him this year, and hunting is what he lives for. I know he will not be able to draw a conventional bow, so I want to buy him a crossbow to help get his spirits up. I need the good bad and ugly of the crossbows. I'd like something light weight, but using a good rest isn't out of the question since he will likely be hunting from a box blind on the ground or a pop up. I don't mind buying used, and really need to keep this under $500 if possible.

Go on the Net and ask best value crossbow. The Barnett Jackal was defined as the best cost and quality for the money. I purchased one for me as I had a shoulder injury and could not draw back my normal compound. It was of such good quality and accuracy that my wife who never hunted archery tried it and asked if she could get one. She is now with me in both rifle and archery and we both were successful in bagging deer with these wonderful low cost crossbows. Purchased through Walmart at 255.00 early lst year.

I was up at Cabelas in Fort Worth the other day and saw several Excaliburs in the bargain cave at some really good prices. I believe also there was 15% off on archery equipment. I shot Excalibur Matrix 380 for several years and its an excellent bow/warranty.

Barnett is a good value. Lots of good options under $500. The differences between a $500 and a $1000 is typically pretty minimal with small speed gains and just better fit and finish. They are all going to be pretty loud, at least in my experience with them. (Sold them for about 5 years). The one really cool feature with some of them is the ability of fitting a hand crank over the stock. TenPoint sells them with the crank as a part of the stock but they are pricey. From someone who knows how much chemo takes the wind out of your sails, I would recommend spending some money on some sort of draw assist regardless of the crossbow you decide. This one seems like a pretty good deal, http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=65196786

For his medical issues, I would recommend looking only at ones that come with or can use a crank. Pay attention to the cost of the crank for each crossbow your considering as some can be pricey or hard to find if bought separately. I would also suggest looking at the specs and consider the overall weight of the bow you choose. Within your price range, I would put those two things over brand preference as long as you stay with well known name brand companies. Being the off season you might also shop around the usual online stores for last year's model crossbows on clearance.

Looking at the crank devices for crossbows,
Tenpoint Accudraw is the most thought out one IMO, the cranking handle has a storage location in the stock and only 5lbs of pressure is required on the handle to operate, there is also a holder for the hook device in the stock so it is completely contained in the crossbow. These Tenpoint works with Wicked Ridge and the new Hortons but those do not have a storage location for the handle. A socket can be used as a handle since it is just a hex nut in the crank device.
Parker and Excalibur use cranks that attach to the butstock in one way or another then once the bow is set are removed for shooting, they both work quite well but do require more pressure on the end of the handle than the Tenpoint
Barnett has one for some of their bows, no provision for storing the hook device or handle and have to be rewound and untangled than the other ones listed above.
If the Parker crank will fit over the butstock it will work on several other makes of crossbows.
For a light weight handy crossbow the Parker Thunderhawk is quite popular and has a lifetime warranty.
Tenpoint has one this year that is nice and a little lighter than some of the others, Titian SS but the crank for a tenpoint is a $200 option as a package and above that if purchased later.

I have 2 Excalibur CBs and they are awesome. He should be able to get something with one. Figure in putting a blind within 25 or so yards from the feeder. Good luck to you.

All I can say is shoot a fixed broadhead. I have not found a mechanical that does not deploy prematurely during release/flight, which causes extreme inaccuracy!

Hard to beat a parker crossbow. I do how ever have a Barnett reverse limb cross bow and like it better than my old parker cyclone.

I'd suggest going to several places that carry crossbows, and shooting as many as you can. Some are very noisy, some are very heavy. I tried out 10-15 different crossbows before deciding on which to buy, then looked online for the best price and saved over $400 from what the retail stores wanted for the same one.

I got a Wicked Ridge G3 Invader (made by TenPoint) this spring at Cabelas for $449 and have been happy with it. Pretty light-weight (about 6lbs). 350fps and if you add a crank then should be easy to use. Just beware that the Wicked Ridge crossbows require a special Omninock nock for the bolt, which is made only by TenPoint.

I am not sure if you can get a crank cocking device for it, but Crosman is putting out a crossbow under the Centerpoint name that is getting good reviews. Price is very reasonable by today's standards (I believe under $300), and quality is reported to be good. It is a rebranded Chinese bow, but carries a 5 year warranty thru Crosman. Might be worth a look. If pulling back the weight isn't too big an issue, you might be better off with a used Excalibur, although they are wider than most compounds, they are super reliable.

Omni noc is used by at least one other Stryker uses them and you can change nocks to omni. Just make sure it is aligned correctly
