A few friends and I were shooting prairie dogs and between the four of us we had a Leica, the new Sig Kilo and my G7 rangefinders. When the shooting slowed down in the afternoon we started playing around with them to see how they compared. They each did a good job of being able to pick out prairie dogs to 600+ yards when held steady enough and never varied more than two yards between them on the same target. When we started ranging cattle the Leica began to struggle once the distances were over 800 yards. It would usually take two or three attempts to get an accurate range and a few times it failed to give any distance. Both the Sig and the G7 did very well to over 1100 yards as long as they were used with a steady rest and still gave results within a couple of yards of each other. We were ranging cattle in tall grass, behind or next to small scrub brush, in front of tree lines and over small rises, in each of these scenarios all three did well until the Leica started having a hard time on the longer targets. For hunting I think anyone of three rangefinders would work great. When we started ranging hard targets to see how far we could get a return I was surprised that the Sig came in second to the G7. It may have been because none of us had a lot of experience using it and that I have been hunting with the G7 for better than five years. The farthest range the Sig was able to return was a metal barn just under 2000 yards and the G7 was able to range a water tower at 2600 yards. It would have been interesting to see where the G7 finally gave up but we couldn't find anything farther than 1 1/2 miles to try the rangefinders out on. I think if I were buying a rangefinder today I would really have a hard time not picking the Sig Kilo 2000. It doesn't have the ballistic computer of the Gunwerks LRF but it's less than 1/3 the price and you can carry it a shirt pocket while the G7 is almost as large as my binoculars. I'm still a fan of the G7 and have no plans of ever replacing it. I have a confidence in the range it displays and the shot correction it calculates. Plus you can program five different rifles into it and easily switch between them . Even with all of that I think I want to buy a Sig rangefinder for the times I don't really need the capabilities of the G7.

I'm sure the program feature is handy on the G7 but the auto darkness feature of the sig to me is better for hunting especially if you also bow hunt.

Also, make sure the batteries are new and fresh on each unit when testing them. If one LRF is lower on batteries, it can impact the readings and distance.

I'm pretty sure the battery was good in the Leica and I know it was a brand new battery in the Sig. I gave him a new battery that afternoon after we killed the other one playing with it. I think the Sig's performance was impacted more by our experience, or more our lack of, with it. I know how to get a return with the G7 because of the time I've spent using it. That was the first time any of us had to really put the Sig Kilo to the test but still, a water tower is a pretty big target.
Each of us tried the three rangefinders and were impressed with them all, even the Leica. If some one was looking for a LRF to hunt with I wouldn't hesitate to recommend any of the three.
AS for the auto dim feature, I would not really consider that when trying to decided on what to buy. It's nice but for someone that's still hunting it would be pretty easy to range a few landmarks then put the rangefinder away for the rest of the day. For the guys that spot and stalk it only takes a few seconds to change the display's brightness and keep hunting.
Factoring in the wind, light, time of day and terrain, I have no problem taking a long shot at a game animal. One thing I won't do is rush the shot. That's just a bad shot waiting to happen.
I really like the G7 and it will be the one I rely on. That's just my preference. All that being said I went ahead and ordered the Sig Kilo 200 this morning.

Thanks for the comparison. I've been thinking about a SIG for several months. 90% of the year I need a range finder to be reliable 1000 yards, and less. Apparently the SIG would perform just fine.

I had both the Sig 2000 and the G7 but recently got rid of the G7. My plan is to move to the new Sig that has essentially the Kestrel with Applied Ballistic built-in. It looks to be much more user friendly than the G7 to input data which was a pain IMO. Another reason was the G7 was too bulky for my application and I found myself not carrying it after getting the Sig 2000.

My plan is to move to the new Sig that has essentially the Kestrel with Applied Ballistic built-in. Is the new Sig going to be a stand alone LRF/Ballistic Calculator or will it need to be paired with a Kestrel via Bluetooth? If they make one that has an internal ballistic calculator and measures atmospheric data like the G7 then I may need to rethink gear selection.

It's a stand alone just like the G7 and in performance better than the Sig 2000. In the tests Applied Ballistics did the G7 was about middle of the pack with the Sig 2000 a little better and And they gave it number One for best for price. The new Sig was only out performed by High dollar RF such as Terrapin class. Hoping this unit will make it to market before hunting season

I got the sig. It's great. The first target I ranged was at the store. Fire hydrant 1300 yards

Mine came in today. After reading the instruction manual a little,I took it outside and ranged a water tower 3 different times. Each time the Kilo 2000 read 2775 yards. This thing rocks!

I got to look at it first hand in Oklahoma last weekend. It's pretty neat but won't be cheap from what I hear.
