Do you have a dog??
Very thorny, rough country. It's been a while since I've been there so I could not tell you where I found birds and where I dodnt. I would plan on staying a while
I'll take a Black Female every time.

Last year the hunting was great. We took 53 birds in two days, with 2 hunters. If you don't have a dog, you will be driving or walking a lot!!!! We stayed in Marathon,tx, if you can get a reservation. I would suggest at least one or two days of scouting, if you are going opening weekend. I would also suggest you sign in before hunting hours start. This will allow you to get to where the birds are ( if you scouted) while the rest of the hunters are signing in.

I was thinking of going in December, when things slow down for us. Planning on taking tt and staying at Stillwell. What kind of boots for dogs?

Sounds like a California thing It's a huge rough rugged remote place with no cell phone service. At times you could be the only person there. You could get into places that if you break down it may take you two or three days to walk out. If someone got in trouble out there know one would ever know to look for them or where they were camped or if they ever existed if there was no sign in/out. Everyone was to sign in and out, not just hunters. If I remember they had a box at the sign in/out to deposit wings too.

I have been interested in going for a while but could not find anyone willing to make the venture. I know my way around the Chap and covered many miles on foot in the S. TX brush. Shoot me a PM if anyone is headed out to Black Gap for quail and looking for a travel buddy or is willing to meet there and show me the ropes.

Hmmmm. So your telling me it's for safety. If someone doesn't sign out then a search and rescue team is automatically dispatched ?
Satellite phones or spot locators work in all the other states

You must be bored today:) This goes on in most public hunts I've been on. Montana,OK,TX I'm sure safety comes first but also tracks usage of the land. Success ratios.....

If I remember, there is the box for your APH card like other WMAs, but also a ledger to sign that includes how long you plan to stay and what campsite your in if camping. On this place, it is very likely that if you leave without signing out and enough time passes beyond your expected stay, someone is probably going to start looking for you and or looking up any contact info to contact you or your family to check on you. Not many people go there. The sign in building is at the headquarters going in and only a few feet walk to enter and should take less than a minute. It would be worthwhile anyway if your hunting to look at the ledger to see how many people are there, if any and where they are camping. And to see how many birds hunters had recently killed, if any. And to look at any available maps and information posted for things like guzzler locations, recently closed roads, etc.

This looks like a pretty awesome trip. May have to make it instead of the Kansas pheasant opener this year. What time of year did you go Sniper?
