Not sure. But it kind of looks like a strange head space gauge. How did you get this piece of brass/device?

Maybe it's a no go attempt at making a no-go gauge.

Maybe it's a no go attempt at making a no-go gauge. Interesting, could be a go attempt or a way to measure headspace as well.

Looks to me like it could be used for headspace measurement.

I have no clue what it is. A friend of mine bought a house, and the previous owner left a ton of reloading stuff in the garage. She knows that I reload, so she gave it all to me. So, mixed in with the spent brass, I found about 50 of these. Headstamped 5.56. Most of the inserts are aluminum, but some are white plastic. I thought headspace guage, but I noticed that a lot of them have spent primers, and what looks like powder residue. BTW, they are way to long to chamber in a 5.56.

Not sure. But it kind of looks like a strange head space gauge. How did you get this piece of brass/device? Winner Winner Chicken Dinner It's a head space gauge. They are long and when you chamber them they will push back into the case so you can see what your trim length needs to be for the particular chamber your rifle has (not all are the same).

I said headspace but thinking chamber length. Now that you question and I look again I see the shoulder, it's head space not chamber length. Thanks for keeping me straight RR.

I began to question myself! I know how easy it is to be thinking the right thing while typing out the wrong thing....
It occurred to me that this thing might really useful during finish reaming a chamber. I've never done it but I've often wondered how you could know when you've got the headspace *just right.*

X2 on the simunition. My FD did some training in a hotel that was set to be demolished, and swat had trained there a few days prior. I picked up several of these after our drill. Some had the white plastic as well. The unfired rounds had a plastic encapsulated pink projectile, which I assume acts like a paintball.

If there were fifty of them, they weren't gauges.

My son is in law enforcement and I noticed a red mark on his arm a few weeks ago while he was visiting and he said he got shot while running thru simulation drills. I chided him about getting shot and he said "you should see the other guys" He said they hurt!

I used these in police training during shoot no shoot scenarios, Vests were required. When training starts you totally forget that this is a setup. Incredible.
