I think you are describing the Maadi Factory 54 stamp but it isn't really a star with APA.. here are some pics of Maadis.

Maadi's come in a variety of forms:

1) Original Egyptian Maadi Factory 54 semi autos that were imported by Steyr (pre-ban) and Intrac or Pars International (ban era with thumbhole stocks). Many of these were put in pre-ban configuration after the expiration of the '94 AW ban.

2) Rifles that have been built with the requisite US parts including receiver (usually an NDS (Nodak Spud) or Morrissey) using Maadi parts kits. Maadi kits can have either all Arabic markings or English (or mixture).

3) Century imported some as well (ok) and also made some combination Chinese/Egyptian AK's (MISR's) that I wouldn't give you .02 for the lot of them. Typical Century monkey built kaka.

If I understand your post and you are saying the gun comes from James River Armory - it's probably of the 2nd variety. These were or are sold by Atlantic Arms.
