it cost too much, period. I just booked four days fishing in Thialand and including airfare it came out to the cost of a hill country axis deer, that's ridiculous. I get it fishing ain't for everybody but I think it's more important to see and experience new places than to spend one day hunting a deer. How many have already been priced out and how long before many more are? We all say we need to save our sport but we make it real hard for new people to get in especially in Texas with no public land and extreme lease pricing. I won't quit hunting I'm very very lucky to be able to hunt several states a year at a greatly discounted price but I can see where a lot of people could just simply not afford hunting.

Sure it's expensive if all you want are trophy's.
Get a lease to just put some meat in the freezer and it cuts the cost.

You need to lower your sights. This one was free for me and only 30 miles from my house.

quote=bill oxner]We found 17 coveys this afternoon in a little under a 3 hours. This is a new record for this pasture. We went out for an hour yesterday and found 4 coveys. Here are a couple of pictures from yesterday. This is Yeats with his front foot up. Payson is doing the shooting. Birds got up like popcorn from this bush.

We were headed to the windmill which you can see in the upper right hand corner, but birds got in our way;

Clifford had a pretty hot hand this afternoon. I remember him pointing 5 coveys. This is one of the;

This was a Garmin find;

Clifford again, with Cracker literally doing the honoring.

Does this beat football, or what?

This is ET whth his new free coat. I told him that the coat was worth about what he paid for it. OOPS!! I hunted with him all afternoon and just noticed his necktie;

Cracker is my wife's little baby. She keeps asking why I don't include more pictures of cracker. This is for you Paulette;

Martini time. Let's pick them up;

Tomorrow is a holiday. We may go back to get Yeats on a couple more coveys.

Tell me more about free bird dogs and Rangers. I'm not talking about me. I hunt Montana, Michigan, Ohio, and New Mexico for cost of tags but think of a new guy trying to get into it and looks up the price of leases and just gives up.

I agree with you to a large degree CMC. I had tended toward fishing more for several years. My parents bought a piece of land we hunt on now and getting involved in the management and other aspects of it has really gotten me back into hunting. The land while expensive is a great recreational property for us and is a good investment for the future at least land has proved to be a good store of value in the past. We have also been trying to take people that we know out there to hunt that either never hunted or don't have the means to do so now.

I would like to hear more about this fishing trip, sound like a great trip!

It sounds more like bragging than complaining to me. It's like complaining about the high cost of premium gasoline or paying too much income tax.

It's getting crazier and crazier for most of the big game hunts for sure. I've got about 2-3 left I want to do - and that's probably it for me. Trout fishing, bird hunting with my dog, and whitetails at my place will keep me occupied in my twighlight years.

That said, you can still do some pretty great hunts on drawn/OTC/general tags all over the west. Heck, even a DIY moose or bear hunt in AK is doable pretty economically. Just food for thought....

And everybody always complains about the cost of TX deer hunting - but I have not met anyone yet who wanted to hunt deer that didn't make it work out somehow.

I agree that hunting has gotten expensive. there's public land you can hunt but it's difficult to do with the restrictions on firearms and when and where you can take certain game.

This is why I've been mainly focusing on fishing now since the startup is a little bit pricey but once you get passed it it gets easier with all the lakes in the DFW area. Once I get a kayak it will really open up alot of opportunities for me.

Mostly lakes, actually they are really big stock ponds I guess. My wife has family there so we will have to do the visit and travel thing but four days of lake fishing basically in Bangkok is cheap.

I heard someone caught a red tail cat in Conroe a while back. Beautiful fish. Wonder how they taste?

While not exactly cheap, except by Texas trophy hunting standards, African plains game is the best value in hunting today. Airfare is only about $1500 right now and the trophy fees are a third to a quarter of what they are here. Yes, you have to save for a while, but the value is there.

Hillary Clinton certainly thinks so. Her plan for universal prosperity is to raise the minimum wage to $1000/hour. What could possibly go wrong?
