Hey Don, we are having the same problem. I started dropping pieces of sponge soaked in bacon grease. I have killed 2 yotes so far using this method. They have become trap and snare wise.

about the size of a baseball, the kind of sponge you wash a car with. soak in bacon grease and throw out around areas that they are coming under fences or around a den. Once the coyote ingest the sponge is swells up and literally chokes them to death.

What keeps the deer from eating it?? I don't want no bacon eating deer. I can't afford to feed them now and if they start requesting bacon it really gets expensive.

Would you guys believe I shot a coyote at my lease and the landowner told me to stop shooting them. He said coyotes eat piglets and therefore help get rid of pigs.

It's called nature. Coyotes have been eating deer and anything else they can catch for millions of years. I would think hunters would understand the whole prey/predator relationship. I have no problem with coyotes being coyotes and I firmly believe that some natural predation makes healthier deer herds. Take away the predators and everything nature does and you may as well hunt in a zoo. I refuse to begrudge predators being predators. That simply isn't logical.

Affecting my lively hood over $2000 there. Add to these probably at least 10 more over the years and you say let nature take its course? I will kill or try to kill every coyote I get a chance at. That is my nature.

.You talk like that until coyotes start affecting your lively hood. Wouldn't change my opinion in the least. Prey and predator have existed together since time began. It is the way of nature. In my opinion the commercialization of wildlife will not be good for hunting in the future. Besides if game is your livelihood then insure it agsinst predators. Ranchers have been doing that for decades. If it costs you $$$ then you're a lousy businessman especially when it comes to exotics which don't even belong her naturally. As for me, I want my game wild and free with all the instincts, including dealing with predators, that nature intended. I have no desire to hunt game raised in a glorified zoo. I am all for letting nature play out like it always has and if they take a deer or exotic livestock, I see no issue.

All ranchers I have known definitely encourage the killing of coyotes on their property. They are destructive just like feral hogs. Protecting your livelihood is far different from a glorified zoo.

I am all for letting nature play out like it always has and if they take a deer or exotic livestock, I see no issue. I look at it a bit differently. Having your game wild and free, that doesn't hardly exist in it's purist form. With creeks dammed for a water source, windmills keeping troughs full, crops supplying supplemental feed and taking away from natural foliage. Hunters feeding (I really hope you do not drive to your hunting spot and hunt feeders), fences, and habitat being taken by expansion (roads, homes and businesses); I don't think there is a deer alive that hasn't had humans be part of its environment. There is nothing natural about coyotes attacking an unnatural setting whether it be a cow or a nubian ibex. Insuring them does nothing about creating a balance. Having an abundance of varmints because you have an unnatural environment, is not natural. To take this a step further, killing mice that get in your pantry would be the same as killing a coyote that got to goats, and I do not think that is a stretch. Heck I stomp on roaches, why? They are a pest that have their place, and that is not in my house. If coyotes encroach on my black buck herd, they get the 3000fps lead stomping. I understand and appreciate your view, I just think it isn't realistic. For the most part, mankind has created an artificial environment for wildlife. Whether it be deer, quail, coyotes or bunnies, I think we have to manage accordingly. Good luck controlling them coyotes Don. If I was still in Pipe Creek I would give you hand.

I think both Flags and Simple Searcher have valid points.
I'm a pond guy and I have no problem with bluegills eating baby bass. Nor with bass eating bluegills in managed water holes. It's just nature at work. Without predators, species get way too plentiful for their environment. And Mama Nature is a cruel bitch.
However, if I was raising/managing exotics or deer of any kind in a controlled environment, I would eliminate anything affecting my livelihood.
I remember Possum Kingdom State Park about 50 years ago. They had massive deer herds with no hunting allowed. Then a long and serious drought occurred. The deer starved and died. It was a pitiful sight.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.
Boy, if I say "sic em", you'd better look for something to bite. Sam Shelley, Rancher Muleshoe Texas 1892-1985 RIP

Coyotes have no closed season, you can poison, trap, and shoot them. Their numbers keep increasing due to their adaptability and intelligence. I too do not think killing something without the intent to eat is wasteful. I am glad that coyotes are smarter than the people trying to control a predator at the top of the food chain. Their is no balance like nature and I agree that man does a poor job whether hunting predator or prey. In North America we have killed a majority of the top predators. We say hogs are varmints and cause millions in losses to farmers. More people are killed every year by vehicle collisions with deer and billions annually due to collisions. People have a way of mucking everything up.
