We made a quick trip to our deer lease for a few errands and some shooting. We finally put up our 1 mile target (1760 yards) on the hill. When we were getting set up at our shooting location, the vegetation was too thick so we had to move forward by about 100 yards, so we only got out to 1670 yards. The laser range finder showed 1676 and 1674 yards on 2 readings. The GPS said we were exactly 5000 feet, which is 1666 yards, so we split the difference, and called it 1670 yards.

I'm running my TRG 42 in 300 Win Mag shooting the Hornady 225 BTHP bullets at 2848 fps in a 29" barrel with 1:11" twist. Glass is a 5.5-22x56 Nightforce with NP-R2 reticle (yes, I know it's MOA, Jason!) My buddy was running a stock Savage 300 Win Mag shooting the 230 grain Berger Hybrids. After confirming zero at 100 yards in camp, we headed out to our spot. I was the guinea pig to go first in the high winds we had today. It took me about 3-4 rounds before I saw a splash low (4.5 moa low, to be exact). Once I saw the miss, I quickly made my corrections. Wind was running between 14-19 mph, switching from about the 8 o'clock to 9 o'clock position, mostly about 8 o'clock. I was running full value to 87% full value wind calls. I was holding 14 moa to as high as 19 moa on the reticle for wind. (If you look at the reticle in the scope, I was holding almost to the rectangle on the far right of the cross hair to make my hits.) I needed 66.5 moa dialed for solid center hits. When I missed, it was always right and left, after getting dialed in. I shot a total of 18 rounds, and made 7 hits on 36" x 48" plate. My buddy made 3 hits (his were top left and the 2 dark spots near the center), for a total of 10 hits between us. (The hit near the center of the plate had 2 shots almost on top of each other.) The wind was getting worse, it was getting hotter, so we packed up and drove to the target for pics. I was able to get a good picture through the scope of our set up. It was a good time. This was our first time shooting at our new 1 mile target location. We will be going again soon, I hope. It was a blast!!!

That plate looks huge through the scope! I figured at 1670 it would be smaller. Looks like fun!

Me too! That wind was bad. It was switching and gusting up and down. I'd send several rounds as quick as I could, and be off the plate.

Thanks, guys!!!

I am dying to get my 300WM out past 1100 and see what it will do. Going to have to trade up the 178's for the 208's I think......

Chad, I love that reticle, but you have to grow up and get you some mils!

Nice shooting!

To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.

Yes, I am a big fan of mils. I have been slowly changing out my NF scopes for mils and mil (MLR) reticles, especially for competitions. This scope I have on my 300 WM I really like, even though it's moa. But, once you understand how to use the scope, it doesn't matter if it's moa or mils. I do like mils and the Nightforce MLR reticle as my favorite set up. But I learned on moa and the NP-R2 reticle. This scope has the moa NP-R1 retcile, which I really like. I like the small graduations between the lines, and it's very useful. Mils or moa, it doesn't matter for me. I can use either equally well. But if someone asks me what they should get, I always say mils!!
