I don't know about the hunting out here in Alabama yet but the catfishing is good. These are a few I caught bank fishing on the Tennessee River, I've never had much luck bank fishing but it's pretty good out here so far.

Nice cats!!
If you are in Athens, you are in bass fishing paradise. You have over 400K acres of prime large mouth / spot / small mouth water within 1hr drive. Blows away Texas. If you like cat fishing, go below Wheeler dam (safety harbor) and drift live shad. Now is prime time.

For hunting, Ala has pretty extensive management areas. Some larger tracks of paper company land that is leased to clubs. Not to many large ranches. Decent water fowl hunting in North Ala.
You'll have to go to central Ala for decent numbers of pigs.
Most deer are heavier than Texas deer for their age but they don't live long enough to get to big.
No MLDs. No high fences to speak of. Last I checked, some places you could kill two deer (buck and doe) a day over a 60 day season.
Can have good quail hunting if you find a property owner.
