Got a late model 6.5Swede spotted at a good price, and wondered what the pro's & con's were on a conversion to something faster in a 22" barrel?

Looks like you could turn it into either of those or just AI the 6.5X55.

Case overflow H2O volume / usable volume with 140gr Berger VLD Hunting seated to SAAMI max overall length
6.5X55 57 grains / 51.6
6.5X55AI 62 grains / 56.6
6.5-284 66 grains / 61.6
6.5-06 68 grains / 60.7

With the last 2 a longer barrel would really be needed to see much real world difference IMO. The AI should yield about a 3+% gain in velocity over the standard. In my 6.5-284 I cannot seat bullets quite that long for mag length usage and have right at 59gr usable space. I can get that VLD to a little over 2900fps from a 24 inch barrel.

How long is the magazine system on the 6.5x55? Max COAL is about 3.150", where the 6.5-06 is at 3.340" and generally with a longer mag than that.

If the x55 is a modern rifle, you can easily push it 260 Rem and 6.5 CM speeds, and probably past them.

I've thought about doing that with my CZ 550 American 6.5x55. The reason I haven't is because to me the gain in velocity isn't worth it. It also won't get me where I want to be, which is to push a 140 grain Berger Hunting VLD to 3100 FPS. For that reason I've abandoned the quest for a 6.5x06. I'm saving now to get a 26 Nosler or 6.5 SAUM.

Thx for the responses. Dunno what the mag box max length is yet, and still tracking down the possible inexpensive acquisition. Ya'll seem to verify I'm grasping at straws or at lest pickin' fly poop outta the pepper again. AI'ing the Swede however might be the cheaper easyiest path to getting into or at the CM/260 MV's. The 22" barrel at this point would look like the next step and lots more spendy that I want to get into at this point, but it'll be dang tough to get 140gr'ers into 264WMg MV's from this platform...hence the appeal of the 26 Nozzler. cheers

My first thought was to get a new M70 in .264 WinMag because I get dealer pricing on them. The issue is they come with a 1:9 twist so that option is out.

Gotta ask. Why the need to get to 3100 fps with a 140 gr bullet? If you can only get to 3000 or almost there, won't turret twiddling correct for distance? The long range guys keep saying that it does (I'm just stirring up some trouble).

Geez...the 6.5X55 Swede is such an awesome cartridge! At least for what it was designed for. It will flat out shoot and deliver amazing knock down power on WT deer! I went to the range yesterday...took my future SIL to shoot a little. I fired two rounds with my CZ 6.5X55 Swede, pic below, and figured I was good to go. It was pretty hot and had others to practice with.

Oh, it's shooting a 1/4" low so I do need to adjust the scope a tad.

Because 1:9 won't stabilize a Berger 140 grain Hunting VLD.

Please do not tell my 264WM amd 6.5-284 that informaton. Guess they are over achievers

I guess it depends on the rifle. My 6.5 Swede with a 1:9 twist will not stabilize them. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I think I'd buy me a Tikka and use the action and do a build off the action. That's what I've done and it's turned out awesome! Chad and Jason recommended it and I've never regretted taking their advice. Below is a pic of the rifle and below that is a target from two days ago. I only fired three rounds but they were pretty good.

So let me get this straight...YOU ARE CALLING ME A LIAR? Just who the hell do you think you are? I am a lot of things but a liar I am not! Perhaps there are some who would do what you said but what a waste! Of time, money etc! Not only that but my intergrity means a hell of a lot more to me than to do what you have accused me of! I don't check my integrity at any door for anything!

Your response speaks a hell of a lot more about your character than mine...

D61 I was being a little too obtuse apparently, teasing you about the excellent group you pictured, and referencing my inablity to shoot that tight a group with out doing it from close enough to put powder burns on the paper.

My character is not the issue if you can't take a little ribbing, as there was no Insult intended, just self deprecation in light of the super tight target you proudly displayed. If you can't recognize that then we have more commnunication problems than we know about.

I've been on this forum since it was created, with a member # of 70, about 12 years ago. That does not mean anything other than I know who can cut up, give & take a tease and who cannot. Nothing More, Nothing Less.

You choose how you want to be known, it makes no difference to me, but YOU Sir are the first person to curse me. Have a nice day.

Sorry Ron, but the written word doesn't tend to allow inflection etc that the spoken word allows. I definitely have seen you on here but I don't "know" you and I've seen others that have taken pot shots at guys that were anything but in jest for the same type of thing. So, I appreciate your explanation and in the future will certainly have a better understanding. It simply hit me wrong this morning. Please forgive me, my language was a little out of character for me...

D61 No Harm No Foul taken, as I am not above making my own errors in judgment and word when I write the 1st thing that comes into my mind, and NOT thinking thru what was actually said and intended.

I'm sure JP hates all the editing I make to my missives that costs him bandwidth ...Oh well he'll survive, or drop me like a hot rock someday when I Pizz him off enough.

A 1:9" twist will stabilize the 140 VLD-H at any decent velocity the 6.5 Swede can shoot. The stability factor is 1.25 with a 1:9" twist at 2500 fps. At this twist rate, it should do fine for anything under transonic, which should be about 1200-1400 yards. I run 1:8.5" twist on all my 6.5 rounds, and the stability factor is 1.4, which is plenty for as far as I can shoot the 140 VLD-H. Out of your 1:9" it should do fine.

Good info to know Chad. I guess my rifle just doesn't like 140 grain pills. It won't shoot the Berger 140 grain or 140 grain GameKing. It does like the Berger 130 grain Hunting VLD very much. The Berger reloading data also states that a 1:8 twist is needed for the 140. This puts the 264 WinMag back into play.

What powders and loads are you trying with the 140? And where are you seating the bullet in relation to the lands? The 140 gameking should do well in that and it's not seating depth sensitive.

The 1:8" is needed for full stability (1.5 or greater). But you can get the bullet stable with a 1:9".

It is easy to forget that twist and the length of the bullet are only part of the story on stability. Velocity is a big factor too. All three interact to either stabilize the bullet - or not.

Kind regards, charlesb
