Hey members, I just picked up a savage model 10 with threaded barrel, the rifle is in 308 win and I have no plans to go suppressed, do any of yal recommend a break, never used a break before have a ruger preditor in 243 which I never saw need with the light recoil of 243. am a big guy 6.1 and 300.00 pounds so am not very recoil shy,is their any advntages to a muzzle break on my 308, and if so what do yal recommended, am going to use rifle for blind hunting like the 18 inch barrel and a bit of bench shooting at range, and a little stalking has big barrel but short not to bad weight wise to walk with, what yals thoughts on a break, my AR is only rifle I have with M B currently

I shoot the same rifle with muzzle brake. I don't think it reduces recoil all that much but it does seem to cut back on muzzle jump which helps to get back on target quicker.

Figure out what thread pattern your muzzle is, and find brakes with that threading. Also, figure out if you want a side baffle brake design or a 360 degree ported brake design (like a Vias style). If it's a side baffle design, make sure if you will need the brake timed or if it has a lock nut to time it yourself. I like the side baffle designs since they offer the most recoil reduction. But these also increase the noise. The APA Little Bastard and Fat Bastard brakes are my favorite.

What Chad said.

I too like the side baffle design, and a few round ports on top doesn't hurt either. The upper end brakes should reduce recoil 35-40%, and that is very noticeable once you're behind the rifle.

I like so see my bullets hit whatever I'm shooting at, as they hit. Brakes help significantly in doing that.

This is one of the best muzzle breaks on the market, superior recoil reductions and almost eliminates all muzzle jump. I will say, it's not one of the best looking though, but that's where form & function meet and you have to decide what matters the most.

I've also heard a lot of good things about the APA Bastard series of brakes. On a lighter recoiling cartridge like the 308, I think the biggest benefit you're going to see is reduced muzzle jump, allowing you to spot you're impacts easier and get you back on target quicker. The major downside, especially for a hunting rig, is the significant increase in noise. It's substantial, and really sucks for you're buddy sitting next to you. Just something to think about if this will primarily be a hunting rifle. If you're prepared for it, and have some ear protection, it's no big deal.

My problem with the muzzle brakes is the noise.

Instead of the muzzle breaks what about those donut things that you put on the barrel seen advertised on one of those sportsman channels. Bought one long time ago put on the 243, seem to help on accuracy.

Brake or no brake you need hearing protection. Might as well reduce recoil while you're at it. I keep Rad Band ear plugs around my neck, put them in when needed.

I would NEVER use a brake on a normal caliber hunting rifle.

I highly recommend it... I have a custom made model 10 in 7 mag. I shoot half in groups all day at 200y. One day I took the brake off cause I got a cool stainless tip for it.

the gun kicked much more and I couldn't shoot much better then 4in groups

It makes the gun louder but you'll shoot much better. My 7mag kicks less then my Tikka 243

I'm curious about the whole "louder" concept and , yes, I have a muzzle break. Does it really increase the noise? I tend to believe that it's the same amount of noise just re-directed so it seems louder and, if so, would make it quieter down range where your game is. Does anyone have the real answer to this? This is what I have on my 10T. I also thought I didn't need a brake since there wasn't significant recoil to start with, but after adding the brake my groups shrank noticeably. If your barrel is already threaded, you'll need to order the Accu-Washer kit to properly align the brake. I had my barrel threaded specifically to fit this brake, so I didn't need any washers.
