So it turns out my neighbor to the East is building a high fence along our whole property line on that side. He cleared both sides of the existing fence (without seeking our, or the land owner's permission, BTW) by 20 yards or so.

Whatever. Lemons into lemonade. I now have an 800 yard sendero. Thing is, I'd be putting a stand nearly next to a fence. There's plenty of access for the deer still come onto our property from the north and south, so I don't think it's going to affect travel that much. It may even help that he's closed himself of with his own little island, I don't know. I do know it's in poor taste to put a stand on a fence line, but does that still apply if it's a high fence?

What say ye? Would it be worth the effort to put a stand in such a place as to take advantage of my new, free, sendero?

Because there is now a high fence dividing the property's there should be no issue with you putting up a blind on the fence line. Maybe he has done you a favor by clearing you a sendero and maybe a food plot. He knows that your blind will only allow you to hunt deer from your side of the fence.

I would put a stand on it without hesitation. If you wanted to be as neighborly as possible about it, don't put a window on that side or block it off if your blind has one on that side.

I wouldn't give two thoughts about it, high or low fence. As long as you're restricting your shots into your property and placing feeders into your property, why not.

Oh we were talkin bout a high fence?

On our low fence ranch, I have a blind about 100 yards off our neighbor to the west that is high fenced. The previous owner said big bucks travel that fence line (our side) and he was not kidding. It's our most productive blind.

On our high fence ranch, we have a neighbor with blind right on the fence looking over a food plot with a feeder 100 yards away from the fence. It does not bother me a bit. We don't have a blind near it and honestly, the deer on our place don't travel much n that area.

If our blind is 100 yds off the fence, and you are shooting at deer along the fenceline, how do you prevent your bullets from crossing the fence?

My blind set up is not facing the fence. The fence runs north-south west of my blind set up and my shooting lane is south southeast. There are two game trails that run north-south paralleling the fence line, but about 150 and 200 yards east of the fence line.

Sounds like you have a pretty good neighbor to me. He cleared a lot of brush off a fence line and made you a nice cleared area to make a good plot. He did all the hard work for you! Should be no problem putting a stand on the fence line as long as your not shooting into his place.

I personally would not like it. I would not do it to a neighbor and I don't expect them to do it to me. I have cleared along neighbors fence lines with my dozer. It helps when checking fence and keeps trees from damaging the fence.

I would put a stand up on the fence line because no deer will be crossing the fence so it should not matter.

If it wasn't a high fence, I could see your point. But since it is a high fence, I would do as stated above and not have a window facing his property, and would plant a food plot and hunt my property the best I could. Now if it wasn't a high fence, it would understand the issue a little more

Why would you insist on having a blind on the fence line when you could have it inside your property a ways and not be bothered with what your neighbor has going on?

Be a good neighbor and talk to your neighbor before putting up the blind on the fence. Shouldn't be an issue unless he is/was planning to put a blind in the dame area on his side of the fence.


Also, he may need to be driving down the fenceline a lot which would disturb your hunting.

Good communication up front can save a lot of problems down the road.

I would also make sure that he did not clear that far on your property line so he can put supports on your side...Unfortunately we had that happen to the ranch we hunt...Once we noticed them drilling holes for supports we notified out land owner and they battled over it...Since he had a;ready set 10 of them, Land owner let him finish BUT paid 100 dollars for each support on his property...Ended up 2800 dollars...Most High fence guys have enough money to not ask the neighbor next door to go in half they just do it...AND yes deer run that fence line like crazy..Esp during the rut....Like everyone else, put up a blind with no window in the back so there is no doubt of you shooting across the fence...

I just think I'd rather not have to worry about my neighbors shooting across the property line on accident, and would rather be safe than sorry. Therefore if it was me who owned the high fence, I would hope that they would place the stands as I stated earlier. Just my opinion And as usual, this topic has been discussed to death before, and will never be agreed on by everyone it is what it is

IMO, it is unethical to shoot a deer running up & down "trapped" by a HF.

I wouldn't put a stand anywhere near it, if it was me.

Well, then the whole debate over whether hunting over a feeder etc..

Do this.. place a pistol along the fence line, then.. the deer can always pick that thing up and fire back.

Seriously though... I do not think the deer comes up to a high fence and say "oh crap!, I am trapped!" and then runs up and down the fence trying to get away. A deer will use a high or a low fence the same way, i.e. they follow the lines. Yes, on a low fence they will tend to cross at certain paths, but the absense of those areas does not trap a deer, being fired at does and by that time, it should be too late, unless you shoot like my buddy, then he is not trapped at all!.. lol

Not sure what the laws are on this one, but IF I decided to put a stand and / or feeder on the fence line i would be prepared to find bullet holes in both. I personally wouldn't shoot someone else's things, but a lot of guys would. They think it is "sending a message" kind of like beaming a guy in baseball. Proceed with caution.

I know several ranchers that built their High fence 20' inside the property line so they could build a road surrounding the property outside the enclosure for oil field workers. So before you place it right on the fence I would check the survey to make sure it is part of your lease.

Interesting. Never considered that. I always assumed the fence setbacks were a preventative poaching measure by letting native vegetation grow up along the old fence or for trying to keep a neighbor from tying into their HF.
