Picked up a small lease west of Coleman about 15 miles, in the crews area. I got the lease mainly to take my pops hunting. It's a small place with good cover on it and a creek that runs through the middle of it. It backs up to a big ranch with lots of cover. I have hunted between Ballanger and Paint Rock and the deer numbers where amazing. I was wondering how the numbers are in this area? Thanks for any input.

Well, thanks to my Ford there's one fewer than there would have been, but he didn't give me a choice!
I think you'll find that area has a ton of deer.

You'll enjoy it! You're a little north of us, were between Talpa and Valera. Deer are pretty good, quite a few turkey, lots of hogs and more dove than you can shake a stick at!!
You can run but you can't hide...

Saw three hogs in that wheat patch a mile east of Crews the other day; they were 50 yards from the road in daylight hours. It's definitely a target-rich environment. The Crews-Coleman stretch worries me every time I drive to Goldthwaite. Good luck to you!

We used to hunt close to Talpa and loved it. The deer numbers are good, Turkey hunting is good and the dove hunting is usually good as well, you and your pops should have a good time.

Thanks for the welcome Daddybigbuck, I have been on the forum for years but I lost all my login stuff and had to make a new account. I think it will turn out good. The last lease we were on I think he seen deer twice all season. I'm just hoping it's better than that.

Wouldn't have it any other way. I grew up with him teaching me to hunt and fish. His health isn't that great these days so I want to make as many good memories with him as I can.

Here's the deal, it's not whether you will see deer, it's deciding on what to shoot. Get your game cameras out and check them at least every three weeks as they are starting to put on horn. Be selective on bucks as a typical 8 should get a pass if your place is anything like ours. Mature 9 points or better in 5th year of horn is a reasonable expectation. This buck got a pass this year because it's not 5.5 years old You will be able to do that because there will be little $hitheads like this one with no browtines.

I plan on getting feeders up and cams out in the next couple of weeks. Any advice on a good place to buy corn locally down there?

Yes, Market Basket is ran by good folks and always has fresh corn and protein at reasonable prices.

The Crews-Coleman stretch worries me every time I drive to Goldthwaite. Good luck to you! There were 9 hogs in that same patch last night, all in the 70-120lb range, including a couple of spotted reds. They were only 100 yds off the road and I had the 6.8 but I figured the landowner and warden wouldn't appreciate it! That was about 8:45, lots of daylight.

Yes, Market Basket is ran by good folks and always has fresh corn and protein at reasonable prices. Yup, the Shoppin Basket is where we buy ours. He'll we buy everything there. It's cheaper than stopping at the walmart in Eastland!
