PSA is good for the money, Windham builds a good gun that doesn't break the bank.

S&w sport 2 is a good entry level choice as well. I'd say academy usually cheapest there but I'm not a fan of them right now. Probably could find a rock river around 800 if the budget allows.

DPMS Oracle or PSA are reliable inexpensive entry points.

Buy the parts and assist with the assembly, would be a great father-son project.

Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

https://www.windhamweaponry.com/content_rifles.aspI have a vex 223/5.56 (all windhams are capable of both calibers) and about to buy my second. my next one will be the src. lifetime warranty is one major reason I bought in the first place, it is transferable as well. right now cabelas has the mpc and src on sale for 100.00 off, 750-800.00 cost, go check them out. src mpc

NG, no clue on the Houston area, but take a look at the Anderson. 6 weeks ago they were $460.00 BNIB. No frills AR but a solid shooter with zero issues.

I would say the smith and Wesson M&P series is a great way to start. Solid gun with ability to upgrade as desired. Will get him/you in the ballgame inexpensive and shoot solidly enough.

Primary arms happens to be in Pearland right off 288 if u want parts to build your own. I'd stay away fro Collectors Firearms. Great selection but a huge rip off usually. If you're looking for something a little higher end, like Daniel Defense or Knight, then u can try Athena. It's gun range off I10 near the west Sam Houston tollway. Their prices are not bad in general l, but obviously u can probably find a bit cheaper online if you're willing to wait for it. There is another indoor range/gun shop near me in Katy called Boyerts. The previous owners in the same location had some very competitive pricing but I haven't been there since.
There are literally hundreds of places all over Houston. Even academys all over Houston will carry black rifles.

Even academys all over Houston will carry black rifles. Academy has moved all their black rifles into the back so the sight of them doesn't scare the customers.
It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

PSA. my dad bought an upper, lower and BCG with CH for pretty cheap. and that thing is a tack driver and no malfunctions. My go to AR is built off a PSA stripped upper and lower never had a single issue with it.

Radical Firearms are manufactured in Houston and make a pretty good AR at a decent price. You can buy from the factory store or from Primary Arms.

Dpms oracle is running about $500 at buds with free shipping.
