Getting a .284 win built right now.......going to be running 180 berger VLD's.....29'' heavy varmit bartlein 1/9 twist.....on a trued 700 action......Anyone know the best powder to start with, I'm thinking H4831 to start with.

That is what I ran in my 284. And it was a hammer.

I loaded and fired a few rounds in a friends 284 with Reloder 26. Seemed to be a a solid performer

I just shot a few trial loads of Re26 in my .280, and it makes velocity like crazy. I see definite potential with the powder for my cartridge. It may be a winner in the .284 Winchester.

Yep same here on the .280 Rem. I was using N560 and while it was impressive on speed when I dropped the ammo in a cooler and lowered the temps to 32F speed fell 50fps.

The Reloder 26 with 168gr Berger's were rolling along in the 2880fps range and shot well so I loaded 50 of them. Only problem is now I really want to try the 175gr Hornady ELD/X's that I have sitting here waiting for a test run in something 7MM. That .699 BC vs the .565 of the Berger Classic just is hard to resist even though at ranges I normally shoot game at it wouldn't make a difference.

Here is a good article on the 284 from another site.

SPG, Is the action a long or short action? This will determine where you seat the bullet, and which powder options will be best for case capacity. If it's a short action, are you having it throated for the 180 bullets? Make sure your smith knows your plans.

Long action. My smith is one of the best, he actually talked me into the .284 I was going to go with 6.5 x 284 at first. I just don't like the idea of $$$$$Lapua brass and having to run a expander die through it. I was hoping someone knew a better way.

I'm considering building a 284 into a light rifle on a model 7 action, 22 inch barrel. Is brass hard to get?

Win used to be the brass of choice but they've increased their price and the quality sucks. Most are taking 6.5-284 Lapua brass and expanding.

Either can be difficult to find at times it's cyclical.
