5.49 per bushel or 100wt? Need a truckload in Mills County, figured we'd be looking at 11 cents/lb.

Just made a buncha calls trying to get corn prices. Lots of places were 9 to 10 per 50. Bar None in Waco was 8 or 8.25. Finally paid 8.04 at Tractor Supply in Wichita Falls. They give(gave) a 10% discount for bulk(25 I think). They are actually 40# bags but the 8.04 is equivalent 50#. Did not go by a Bucees.

There are always exceptions, but it seems to me that Bucees consistently has the best prices. Yall agree? Is there anyone that consistently beats them. Month in and month out over the last couple years.... Especially when you factor in that they have locations spread all around, its hard to beat. One of our leases we buy 3 pallets at a time and its a far piece from a Bucees so we always pay a little more locally to keep from hauling that much that far and the guy that fills em for us doesnt go by a Bucees anyway. The other lease we buy one or at most two pallets at a time and we usually go right by Bucees only an hour or so from lease.

I haven't been in a while but Brown Feed in Lampasas usually beats anywhere else IF that is anywhere close to where you hunt or on the way. I usually pick up 1500-1800 lbs and haul to my place south of Ozona. It adds about an hour to my trip but saves $2.50-$4 a bag over the feed store in Ozona. Brown brings in corn by rail and bags it there onsite, also will give 10 cents for each empty bag returned for reuse.

PMK, thanks for that info. I just called Brown and they are 7.75. Bucees sounds like they are close to that at various places but I havent found anything else at 7.75. Lampasas is actually on the way for my guy that fills one lease. I always wonder what it "costs" to haul an extra 6000 #s about 2 to 3 hours.....

lets figure a ton, 2000# at 40 bags. Travel in a truck going 70mpg is around 15-20 mpg, so lets figure high end 20 (I get 15ish). to go the extra hour it costs about 9 bucks (current diesel prices around 2.79/gal times 3.5 gallons).

9 bucks spread over 40 bags is less than 25 cents a bag. So strictly from a money stand point, lets figure 25 cents per hour per bag.

So, to save money, it would be worth saving 25cents a bag for an extra hour, 50 cents a bag for an extra 2 hours, 75 cents a bag for an extra three hours..etc....

The question is how much time are you willing to spend to save 20-40 bucks? For me I will gladly pay the extra to save the time.... up

interesting numbers Texas buckeye ... the extra hour also includes waiting and loading time, which would happen on the other end if I were to buy in Ozona. It's only about 37 miles extra driving or 30-35 extra minutes for me,

The last time I went to Ozona, I left early before Brown opened and planned on buying out west, which was over $4/bag more than Brown Feed back in January, times 36 bags (1800 lbs) or $144 more. That is sizable amount for the number of feeders I maintain at multiple locations year around ... At least for an extra 30-35 minutes out of my way on a 5.5-6 hour trip 6-7 (minimum) times annually. So I will give up the 30-35 minutes each trip to save ~$900-1000+ over the course of a year.

Interesting scenario and cost but there is the possibility of additional cost IMO.
Here is another scenario (and of course there are a 100 or more scenarios) that I look at when it comes to cost.
I will try and use the same numbers and keep the math simple:
I make a 6 hour trip and 1 hour into my trip I pick up 10 guys at 200 lbs each. = 2000 lbs of corn.
Originally I get 20 mpg and assuming in those 5 hours I average 60 mph then I travel 300 miles.
I was getting 20 miles/gallon so I used 15 gallons (300 miles/20 mpg= 15 gallons)
but now with 10 guys in my truck I get 10 miles/gallon and I use 30 gallons. (300 miles/10 mpg= 30 gallons)
15 gallons more at $3/gallon = $45. Seven (7) trips @$45 = $315. Now if you save $900- $1000 that is still the way to go.
For me if the cost is $1-$1.50 more per bag by buying it closer to my destination then a person needs to think about that,
Of course if you travel 5 hours and the last hour you pick up 2000 lbs of corn or the miles/gallon is whole lot different
then these numbers change a whole lot more. Some guys have big trucks so 2000 lbs means nothing.
That is why there are so many scenarios. Sorry this got long.

thanks

LOL ... .yep, and I have thought that route too and waited to buy towards the end of my destination to find the feed store was already closed for the weekend and I made a 5+ hour trip one way for pretty much nothing.

and using your scenario, you need a better truck if your mileage drops from 20 mpg to 10 mpg by adding 2000 lbs of corn ... loser8 lol444
