He's the Cline line dog box guy right? I've only talked to him over the phone about dog boxes. Didn't even know he sold dogs. Seems like a nice guy and has been around a long time. (If we are talking about the same guy)

I bought my dog box for my Gator from him. I've heard a few bad reports about his training.

What did you hear Bill? I don't know the man. Someone in Springtown told me he had some dogs for sale.

I owned two pups and my hunting buddy had two from Cline. we got them at 9weeks old. They were trained by us, they all started the season at 8 months. They were easy to train, with a lot of bird sense and were pointing by ten weeks, retrieving to hand at 12 weeks. They were backing at 3 months old. We needed some new blood in our line and we didn't regret buying them, they made great gun dogs. But we had 3500 acres loaded with birds. They were bought in 1993,so I will not speak about the dogs of today.

Just look at the dogs and not the man.

Friend of mine bought a dog from him and was happy with her. He's got some nice looking dogs that's for sure. A friend of mine has some really nice pointer pups for sale if you're looking for something. Send me a pm if you're interested.

I've traded a trailer for a dog with cline and happy with the outcome. But, I know the same folks he buys dogs from and not all of them are ones that work out. But that's with any dog you buy, might get a good one, might get a not so good one.

I bought a finished dog from him last year. She was just as he described. Plan on picking up a B&W pointer gyp tomorrow. So far all dealings with him positive.

Whatever happened to training your OWN dog.. Your the one that going to be hunting with it. At least be sure to go out and get trained too. Dropping the dog off is and getting it trained is only 50%.

Some people think they don't have the time or resources to train a dog. If they have time to hunt it, I don't see why you wouldn't have the time or resources. There are also plenty of different gun dog groups that will help out as well. To me it is well worth training my own dog and I don't mean the money that was saved. Could a pro have trained my dog better?? Maybe. From what I read, some pros have cookie cutter methods that do not work for all dogs. Those dogs that do not take to the training do not do so well and in some cases make things worse. Am sure good pro is definitely worth it though.

Just like anything else you make an investment in, you have to do your due-diligence in choosing a dog trainer. For me, I don't expect the trainer to break a young dog to 100% broke. I just want him to really get the dog's mind on the birds and maybe just green, meat dog broke. I can do the rest in the field when I hunt. Plus, I have to work 12-14 hours a day just to keep the lights on and the mortgage paid plus my hunting expenses. That leaves no time to work pups on a routine schedule. A trainer fills this void for me. Do I feel that I could do as good a job training? Absolutely! I just don't like training after dark of which it would be for me. The trainer is just the starter and I am the extension and executor of his work.

You have to have a place and birds. I was lucky with the last three pointers I trained. I had a pasture and a Johnny house across the road. I'd just load them in my Gator and take off. Here you go.

All bird dogs point. The breaking process teaches them to hold point. There are two ways to teach a dog to hold point, with dozens of variations. The first way is to let the birds train the pups. That generally involves launchers and pigeons, with some whoa breaking mixed in. It's very effective. I use the Delmar Smith method, substituting the e-collar for the bump under the chin. My dogs are completely whoa broke before I put them on birds. I use pen raised quail, because I can be done with them for the summer. I like to start in August, and finish in time for hunting season.

I start off on the whoa post. I introduce the e-collar the same day, that I introduce the whoa post. Here's cracker on her first day with the whoa post;

I keep them on the whoa post only until I can get out in front of them, and then go to the yard for heel and whoa. Cracker tended to sit, so I had to start with the suitcase hitch. I go from the yard to longer walks. The pup has pretty well gotten it down after three weeks.

I then go from the walks to whoa in the field. Here's Cracker in the field in the field, before I put her on birds. This whole process has taken me around four weeks.

This is her first day on birds. I train alone, so I had to plant the bird, where I could wrap the CC around a bush. Notice the slack CC.

I kept her on the CC for three training days. She only went around on the bird one time. Here she is after 9 training flushes.

I started walking some of the birds out after a few days. Here you go;

A little side note. My birds were not recalling all that well, so I used Cookie to point them while I netted them;

A lot depends on the pup, and you have to adjust for each pup. Cracker has never taken out a single pointed bird or covey.

Similar to Bill. Seen kind of mixed results, but all experience was 10-12 years ago. One friend picked up a year old dog that wouldnt cross a barb wire fence. Traded him for a three year old that was just fair. I bought a 3 year old female for my dad from Cline and she had been a S Texas jeep dog. She had good bird sense, no interest in retrieving, pointed with style but we struggled to get her to stay with us & hunt for us.
