"These are by far our favorite kinds of restaurants in Texas. We value quality food and hospitable service over a fancy atmosphere any day. Here are 10 mom and pop restaurants that will make your heart (and taste buds) happy."

Been to Mary's of course and Poor Richards from the list. That food at Blue Bonnet at #1 sure does look really good.

Overall the Bluebonnet is not as good as it once was. Their pies are still top notch.

I wish poor Richards had shredded hash browns , they either have home fries or a patty. Other than that it's great!

Mel's Diner in Tomball/Magnolia area should be on this list. The grilled or blackened catfish is out of ths world.

Are these supposed to be 'diners' only? There are lots of good Mom and Pop mexican food and BBQ joints that I would think would be on this list over some of these.

I miss Allen's Family Dining in Sweetwater. The gang from the deer lease could put away some fried chicken. Left just enough room for peach cobbler.

5D in Avinger is a damn fine meal. Cook up a great ribeye, but their CFS can't be beat.

Talked up Bluebonnet to my wife several years ago, ( we hunted in Llano for several years) we stopped a vacation to Fredericksburg. Food was OK, not great! Pies were greatness!

Bluebonnet was meh the few times I ate there. Koffee Kup up the road in Hico has better pies, but Bluebonnets aren't bad. I like Mary's, just not the CFS. There used to be a little hidden gem in Pleasanton called Carrie's but she closed for some reason. It was excellent all homemade food. Allens in Sweetwater must have gone down hill. I have tried it a few times and it is consistently bad. Another good one is Goodsons in Tomball.

I have been to a couple of the ones on the list, but we did not think they rated a return visit. Food and even the atmosphere is based on opinions and what one person may like can be another's "garbage".

Like this one, we would stop there, just because of the name. 3 of my aunts married Czech's and they cook a lot different than the all German side of the family, but all of it is good.

Been to 1, 3, 5, and 10. Lived in Marble Falls for a long time. The Bluebonnet is always good food and hospitality. They really take care of there waitresses and staff really well. They pay them like $18/hr + tips, and medical insurance. Rumor was they use 500 dozen eggs a week making the meringue for there famous pies. Worth the wait in line!

Maddie's on the square on Decatur (now Sweetie Pie's) would make that list, but she and her hubby got too old and shut it down.

Huck's in Denison is a family owned and operated single location eatery...that IMO serves the best Fried Catfish I ever ate in my 40 years of travelling most of the United States on business. google Huck's and notice the customer base reviews that pulls travelers from the DFW & Oklahoma regions, and their almost 98% approval of the draw of Hucks signature catfish dish's.

The mom & pop Cajun style outfit that followed Hucks in the Pottsboro location after Hucks's outgrew the building, finally failed in the last year or so despite offering very acceptable food at reasonabl prices...BUT they didn't have that "Certain Flair" to create a destination item that could draw folks from a larger than local county area customer base.

There is a little place called Catfish Grill on 287 business just south of 518 that is our new best catfish ever place. Great big old fillets that are NOT overcooked.

I've been to the 1, 2, and 10...but I want to throw this in the mix; Coyote Bluff in Amarillo! Great burgers, steaks, bathtub full of beer (help yourself with honor system) and best of all, a questionable atmosphere...

What's the name of the now humongeous block long Mexican place in North Ft Worth a block east of North Main, north of th stckyards?? that later made egg flips famous...Well the flat head Ford era of a brain backfired and spit out the name "Joe T Garcia's"...right? Old Age is hell was never a truer statement these days, juggeling too many hot potatoes.

Eagle 1's apt looking "most important feature" of the place in Armadillo triggers some fond memories of when the world was young and eating in dives was a regular cheap adventure, and would apply to my 1st trip to this Mexican place ummmm before most of ya'll were thought of as a consequence of a good time on Friday Nite.

...back in the day before it got popular...the old house it was in had the south exterior walls held up with 2x4 bracing from the concrete walkway around the house ...facing a gravel road ...on the corner behind a car wash on North Main that was noted for drug deals even in the early '60s'. My frat bro from Garland suggested a finish to a great day at 6 Flags and the DA dates were all up for a little adventure, beside what we had planned for later. We pulled up and I REFUSED to get out of the car while looking at the street people wandering around, until said frat bro pointd out 3 chauffered limo's and 4-5 Lincoln Continentals's & Caddie Fleetwoods parked in front, squeezed in all up and down the block.

What a place, stand in line waiting for food, and use the honor box for beer, walk thru the kitchen to get to the back dining room, food served family style in heaping quanties that the In Crowd gang argued over getting the last scrapings off the serving platters. Went couple years later with the now BH and was PO'd about having to stand in line outside & only one person at a time could use the honor box...until we got in and were seated about 25-30 feet from John Connaly, eating by himself & half a dozen Secret Service guys watching with a glass of water in front of them. They put a damper on the crowd's usual yelling at each other trying to see which SS guy had the UZI. Football weekends were awesome crowds.

Went back several times anytime we were back in DFW from living out of state, but it was never the same once they got BigTime.

I really don't understand why Lumber Yard in Edgewood made that list. It's just "okay." I have eaten at some of the others listed and they're pretty good...but as a local...Lumberyard...meh

I'm not stopping anywhere that looks like it's in a strip-mall. Anyone travelling Hwy-77 from Waco to Cameron or vs versa on a Thursday to Saturday night take a east in Chilton and get a rib eye or NY Strip and loaded baked tater at Frank's. Best danged restraunt steak I ever had. (And I use the term "restraunt" loosely, it reminds me of the old Westphalia Store) It's at the "Y", too, between Lott and Marlin. BYOB from the station a bit further up. Same route, for a burger the Golinda store is great. They have fresh fried shrimp on Friday nights, too. They're also a convenience store, but you can pull a beer out of their cooler to have with your meal and they'll just add it to the bill. It's in an old wooden gas station.

I would add the Blessing Hotel in Blessing Texas & Po Melvins in Irving....wasn't impressed with the joint in Leona the few times we tried it.

Thinking the same thing. Welcome To Facebook

If the 2nd amendment was written just to include guns for hunting, why is there not an amendment to protect fishing poles?

Bluebonnet is a lil overrated

And ANY restaurant that serves:

1. Iceberg salad topped with carrots from a bag as their house salad
2. Frozen fries instead of fresh handcut quality fries
3. Non home baked fresh rolls

should NOT be on that list PERIOD

And a few are...

People either love or hate Mary's it seems.

A couple of hole in wall diners worth checking out are The Switch Cafe in Cool (between Weatherford and Mineral Wells), and Mary's Brazos Cafe (not associated with Mary's in Strawn)

As previously said coyote bluff in Amarillo is a must stop. I also recommend Pioneer Cafe in Suphur Springs, and I would put Poor Richards in Plano much higher on that list

There is a place on 1960 in Spring named The Potato Patch. It should be close to the top on any list.
They carry around and serve fried okra, fried green tomamtoes, muffins and toss homemade yeast rolls.
The food is outstanding.

Mary's n Strawn is way over rated. Sure it is a big piece of meat but is over breaded, greasy and the whole place smells like cigarette smoke and burnt grease.
