I know this question is as personal as religion, but here goes: I'm looking to buy an AR for pigs. Will eventually put IR on it when I have the $ saved. I'm not a long range sniper so shooting up to 200 yds. Looking for $1500 range, SPC 6.8 110 gr (or the like). I live in the North Austin / Round Rock area if there is a shop local for me to look as well.

Comments / suggestions?

I built a 6.8 a little over a year ago and you can build a custom 6.8 for under that price range.

Not sure if your wanting to build or just buy.

I am very happy with the ar15 performance barrel I put in mine. Not trying to plug another forum but 68forums.com is a good one to learn or no more. There are quite a few people that feel the same about the barrel I have.

For pigs I would buy the Hornady 120 ssts. They seem to knock things over dead on the spot. If you want to see some evidence of knockdown, TexasLawman here has quite a few videos on youtube under lonestar boars.

6.5 Grendel or 6.8 SPC, either one will work great for that application. Hornady factory SST loads work very well from either.

There are specialty forums for each the 6/8 one mentioned above or the 65grendel.com/forum have some good information on their specific caliber.

For that price you can get some very good ARs in either caliber.

with a hog gun you'll need to factor whether you intend to buy factory ammo or reload - or maybe both.

If you reload then the options are endless.

If you don't reload then know that 6.5 Grendel and 6.8 SPC II are distributed at local stores in limited variations and the price is typically 22.00 a box (20 rounds).

All that to say this - you might want to look at a lightweight 308, that ammo is available in wide varieties and pricing is less over the long haul.

$1500 for the whole rig, or just the rifle? I love my 6.8, but if I had a $1500 rifle budget I'd be buying a DPMS G2 Recon in .308.

Bud's Gunshop Stag 6.8

That hyperlink will take you to Bud's, I would buy it there and have it shipped to the Gun Dealer close to your house. I have tested the Stag in 6.8 and it worked well on targets, hogs and, Aoudad. After testing the rifle, I gave it way to a Sheriff's deputy in North Texas. He tells me it works well for him. I think he told me he has shot several hogs and deer with it. Make sure you get magazines made for the 6.8 round.

I put this SCOPE on the rifle.

This entire package should cost less that your budget.

I have the 6.8 and 308 and love em both but i agree with pig popper and go for the 308 for the variety of ammo and alot more potent on big pigs. I have taken hogs with both but the ar 10 has the edge.

I have 308, 556, 300 BO and 6.8 (one for me and one for the boys), I take the 6.8 out the most, it just works and is a lighter package.

If you walk around at all I would second guess a 308. Toting a heavy gun is no fun.

I want to say I built mine for under $1,100 before the scope. I could have built quite a bit cheaper, but I splurged on a trigger and whatnot.

I don't have an exact weight, but the DPMS Recon 2 308 and the S&W M&P 10 are both quite a bit lighter than most semi-auto 308 rifles.

Thanks all... appreciate the opinions. I think I'll stay with the 6.8. Is a 1:11 twist with 120 SST's factory loads sound right?

You'll be good to go with that caliber and load. I still have an SBR in 6.8 and 300 blk. AR10 308 that I'm switching to 6.5 Creedmoor as soon as the barrel arrives. 6.8 is a good all around caliber with various weight bullets to choose from. I think you'll be pleased with your selection.

What about the 7.62x39, nobody talks about these. Does it have bad reviews, not a tack driver what? Just wondering, like to use what ammo I have not going into another caliber.

Federal factory 6.8 90 grain bonded soft point (Gold Dot) is a great pig round and can be had for $9.99 per 20 round box.

If going this route, I would look at a factory matched rifle. The Rock River Arms LAR-47 comes to mind. Hopalong on the forum here was going to get one for serious hog hunting. Maybe a PM to him will get some insight.

A few reviews on the Rock River LAR-47:

https://www.gunsamerica.com/blog/rock-rivers-new-lar-47-line-ar-ak-new-gun-review/

http://www.gunsandammo.com/reviews/rock-river-arms-lar-47-review/

https://www.shootingillustrated.com/articles/2015/3/18/rock-river-arms-lar-47/

With your budget, I would look for a used one and save on tax, and maybe get a scope included for a few hundred under that $1500 limit.

Easier to build your own. Great AR caliber as well. Just have the correct bolt and an enhanced firing pin. I think I may build another one and SBR it.

well..... looking through various forums, is a 5.56 too light for hogs? I feel like it is, in general. I know, I know....shot placement. But in general, I was thinking the smallest I would go is 6.8 simply for the shock / knock down power.

I think the 6.8 is the way to go also. I plan on taking my current 556 AR and just purchasing an upper in 6.8. That way I am always using the same trigger (geissele of course) and the 556 is so much cheaper for range and fun shooting.

Practice with the 556 and hunt with the 6.8. Best of both worlds.

This is what I use on my night gun, it is a tack driver using steal case cheap ammo. I put a longer firing pin in the BCG and it cycles the fine.

Ammo cost $6 for 20 rounds.

I've put the Rock River X-1 300 BLK out & 223/5.56 (tan) on my 'wish list' at Bud's Guns. Can't find them available anywhere. I plan to buy one, and buy the Upper in the other caliber.

A lot of your hog hunting will occur at night....might save a bit for NV or thermal.

I have all but I build a 7.62/39 AR and it has became my personal choice for a hog rifle, when hunting I usr steel cased 123 grain hornady sst,s about 30.00 for 50 rounds, cheap Russian ammo to plink with, the above bullet is real close to a horady 120 6.8,
