We have a couple of feeders that red ants have decided to make home close to them. We think this may affect the deer that come to the feeders and would like to get rid of them. Is it best to just use some kind of over the counter poison or is there a better way to get rid of these guys?

thanks,

Never noticed that red ants affect deer activity at a feeder. If you have horned toads around those ants are a feeder for them as well.

Simple cures found right in the kitchen.
-Make a safe ant killer out of 50/50 mix of powdered sugar and baking soda. Mix it thoroughly. Put a pile in a good location and let them get to it. After several days you will have few left.
-Ants also don't like cinnamon. Spread that under or around feeder as a deterrent.

Cutting torch. Set oxy/ acetylene, don't light. Stick tip in hole for 10 seconds,+/_. Then light torch and stict flame to hole. The ground for about a 10' circle will actually lift just a tad. Concussion will kill every last one. Don't get carried away with the gas mix. Heck, 5 seconds probably is enough. As with reloading, check to make sure this load is safe in your ant bed, it is safe in mine. I can't guarantee yours.

No need to be worried about the Texas native red ants.

As just mentioned, If they are the big native red ants, don't do anything. We have them at almost every feeder we have. They don't bother the deer at all. And we have lots of horned toads. cheers

Red ants are not a problem. Leave them alone.
