I seen this on Instagram. I have never heard of this so my question is, is this a real thing? Can it actually be done? Anyone ever tried it or seen a blade made from the chain from a chainsaw?

Yeah another cool thang is Motorcycle chain Damascus - actually makes a purdy good blade! Not gonna hold an edge like CPM 154 But cool nonetheless!

I would imagine you have to acid wash the chain to get rid of the oils, or do they burn off in the forging?

It would have to be cleaned first. Any oil would not only contaminate the billet but could also do the same to your forge lining. I'm not a forger so I'm just going by what I've been told.

Most motorcycle chains also have rubber o-rings at every link. i think that is another reason you see chainsaw and cable damascus more often than motorcycle chain damascus.
