Thinking about a new ATV. Used to have a Honda. Now have a Yamaha. I think either would work for me. I like the idea of the Honda push button electronic transmission, but I don't know how tough they are. Do any of ya'll have any user experience? Is the transmission tough enough for years of service?

Hondas are like the pink rabbit, they just keep on running. I've had mine since 1986, still going. A 2002, still going. I also have a 1967, 160 scrambler I bought new , needs some carb work but still runs if I was a better mechanic.

i have a foreman 500 i bought new in 2013 and a 250 big red my dad bought new in 85. Both have never let me down or stranded. I love the power steering on the foreman. It has 300 hard miles so far with no hiccups

I put 18,000 miles on a 2004 Hinda Foreman, and those were very hard miles by a 18 year old kid who loves to play in the mud. Had it for 11 years, sold it for $2500 and it ran like brand new. Also had a 2004 with under 2500 miles that was electric shift, it was a gem. Sold it to family and they ride it a lot, never had an issue with the electric shift. The transmissions are more than capable to withstand any abuse you can throw at them. But the Honda and don't worry about anything except keeping the gas fresh

I am looking at the Honda Rancher 4x4 with the DCT/electric shift and maybe the power steering. Looks like I can get it for less money than a Yamaha Kodiak that's similarly equipped.
BigPig, thanks for the info on the electric shift. That's just what I hoped to hear.

Electric steering is nice, but not a necessity. Ive never met anyone that couldn't steer and ATV. My wife's 80 year old grandmother still rides hers. It can get real sketchy when at high speeds, but it is very nice when you're riding with your gun on your back and one hand on the handle bars

I've got an '05 Rincon with the electric shift, and I've beaten on it regularly without a single issue. Well, one issue, but that was because I didn't run the fuel out of the carb when it was going to sit for a while, and it gummed it up. Now, if I'm not going to ride it for more than a few days, I'll turn the petcock off at the tank and let it run itself out of fuel. No more issues. I run it in manual mode 90% of the time, unless I'm one handing it.
I rode a bike with power steering a couple weeks ago, and for an all day ride I'm sure it would make a huge difference on rider wear, but for a lease weekend I've never minded mine not having it. You just have to figure out if the additional cost of it is worth it to you. one the one hand, it's significantly more pleasant to ride. On the other, it's something else to break, and probably not cheap when it does.

Honda all the way. Have 3 in my shop , can't kill em. My boys and I have tried. I prefer manual shift, less electric crap to go bad.
One even survived Ol' Fatboy Clean riding at the lease for awhile.
Best one is my 2009 Foreman 500. Solid rear axle can tow more weight better, not too much sag.

Gutit, I've long been a fan of manual shift, but mostly these days it's the grandkids (large and small) using the ATVs. Everybody grumps about my old Big Bear and the manual shift and how it hurts their delicate feet while wearing flip-flops. So, bowing to pressure from all sides, I'll go with an easier shift and maybe EPS. It's only money...
I'm leaning toward the Honda, but could go Yamaha.

I personally like / own Artic Cat. Never had a problem out of my 2010 550, and still have the original battery in it.

Yamaha and Honda are both good rides IMO. No experience with electric shift, but my Grizzly has been a great ATV

Honda all day long for a work bike,(play bike different story) they keep on going after many years of abuse, but they do lack it in the pants when it comes to hp numbers compared to competition models, maybe that's why they run 20 years tho. I drove the push button shift ranchers a few times and got to admit they are Are pretty cool and seemed quite capable.

Just took in the Big Bear to have a carb kit put in, engine valves adjusted, and a new spark plug. And, they offer a 'detailing' service. Not cheap, but the old buggy will be clean and shiny for the first time in many years.
And I shopped for a new machine. The Kodiak (entry level version) looks like all I need. Red, 2wd/4wd, fuel injected, auto tranny, and a couple of things that have really mattered over the years - big ground clearance and high rack capacity. Compared to the Honda Fourtrax, ground clearance is over 2 inches higher. Rear rack max weight is 198 pounds versus 133 on the Honda.
Tomorrow I test drive the Honda.
Out here in the bushes, my Big Bear's ground clearance (9 in) has been important and often not quite enough. The Honda only has 7.3 inches. That matters. I'm leaning toward the Kodiak at the moment.

Well, I was leaning toward the Yamaha Kodiak, but bought the Honda Rancher today. Was really going to wait, and was strongly resistant to buying today, but the salesman kept going lower and lower, and when he hit $1000 off the first price (tt&l) he had hit me with, I bought the darn thing.
2wd/4wd, indep rear suspension, red, with the DCT tranny (push button or full auto). No power steering, since it steered real easy without. Can't get the wife off the darn thing. She has her own ATV, which I continue to mention to her.
The kids and grandkids are gonna love this Honda. Now I need to sell the Yamaha Big Bear once it's had the full workover at the dealership.

I have a 2003 Yamaha Grizzly that has just been fantastic. It has almost 8000 rock crawling, tree pulling, trailer hauling miles and has never required anything but batteries, tires, spark plugs, oil and gas. Still has the original drive belt.

30378, I know what you mean about the Yamaha. The Big Bear that I will now sell is a 2000 model and all I replaced till now was a carb kit (4 years ago) and a rubber handlebar grip. And a battery or two, and oil, filters and fluids. The thing has been great. Even beyond great. It's now at the Yamaha place for tuneup, prob a new carb kit, and beautification (detailed). I hope the Honda wears as well.
