the ones that fasten to the rail or the bag the attaches' to the hand guard, anyone tried either?

I have not used one, but I've seen a few shooters use them at the range where I RO a few times a month. Seemed to work pretty well.

I've used the kind that attach to the handguard with velcro, and they just plain SUCK. I sprung for one marketed by Caldwell a while back, and it is by far superior.

I have the Caldwell, and have tabs on the rails of both my .223 Wylde and 6.8 and swap it back and forth. It works really well but adds about 3" in width when mounted.

I also have the one that attaches to the handguard with velcro. It will catch a couple of shells and then block the ejector and jamb the gun. I would not recommend it.

Exact same experience. I think it lives in a drawer now.

I've wondered about taping or tying a handtowel to the scope. Granted, it wouldn't catch the brass, but it would prevent it from flying into the bushes and the total cost would be about 25 cents.

I have a couple Caldwell's that attach with velcro. I adjust/fit it to rifle then tighten a hose clamp over the velcro. It stays in place and no jamming. If shooting prone or bench leave the bag open so it just guides the brass into a little pile right there.

This technique works great.
I've been doing this for years.

The Caldwell with the Velcro has been working fine with .308 If you don't have a forward assist, I could see it not staying in place. But I hook the steel frame of the catcher behind the forward assist, and pull it snug forward, wrap the Velcro. Hasn't given me any problems. But I don't let more than 10 pieces of brass build up, inside.

I have the Caldwell RiverRider posted and it works great with 556 and 6.8 but I've had no luck with 308 as I can't get the catcher opening aligned close enough with the ejection port. Mounting position of the pic tab varies a great deal dependent on the type of rings used.

I have a fixed carry handle. Screwed.

I had my son trained to catch the brass for a while, but now he doesn't want to.

Kittens are so cute, but then they turn into cats... Same deal with kids. They grow up, and all of a sudden they are too dignified to catch your brass for you.

The cuteness starts wearing off too, and they start looking more and more like you do.

I know what you mean. When my grown daughter was little she would sing all the verses to Rocky Raccoon and loved to eat gizzards. That ended years ago. My son used to pull my finger anytime I told him to. Not anymore.

Your daughter's musical taste has changed. Your son, now he just got smarter.
