So I have a question for you hog trapping experts. I've not trapped much. Only shot them. I have a rather large hog that's been rooting my yard the past month. After numerous attempts to shoot him, (his patterns are so irregular I've yet to get a good shot at him), I borrowed a trap from a friend. Last night I had it baited with a wet corn and hog wild. He got in the trap sometime around midnight but managed to find a weakness in one corner where the hog pannel wasn't welded good and tore a hole in the trap. For his size he amazingly got out of a small hole. I've rewelded and fixed any weaknesses I could find
My question is, do I stand a chance of getting him again? I figure he prob won't fall for it again! Any insight or ideas on how I can get him again before he destroys the rest of my yard?

I'd continue to corn it a few nights but wire the door open so he can go in and eat and leave maybe he will get use to it and then you can set the traps again. Or you could just try again and maybe he will fall for it again.

I will definitely rebait and try again then. I wasn't sure if I would be wasting my time or not. I figured he prob wouldn't fall for it again.

Maybe. Since he got out, he may not realize just how much trouble he could be in by going back for another snack in the trap.
I have two unwritten rules: 1. 2.

He ll stay away That would prob do it but would take more than a few pounds to dust my entire yard even once.

I wouldn't expect any mature hog that has escaped a trap to return to it, but you have nothing to lose....so might as well try.
Good luck, hope you get him.

I'm tired of sitting up from midnight to 5 am waiting for him. Lol Go get a Chamberlin Driveway Alarm. Set it up, turn it on and go to sleep. Alarm will wake you up, get some coffee, wash your face and then BANG! Charlie

I bought a driveway monitor at Northern Tool, set it up by feeder, had to muffle the sound but could go to sleep and it would wake me up. It also had a red infrared light on it that would come on when something pass in front of it.

Bait the trap; wire it open; bait all around the trap; set up your driveway monitor close to the trap gate, and let nature take its course. I've started using dw monitors when I'm varmint hunting at night; I just clip one of the alarm wires so all I get is the light coming on. And for deer hunting, if you're in a blind, it's kinda nice to have a couple of the monitors set up on game trails leading into your feeder or field of fire. Gives you a "heads up" that something heading into your area.

Update: well it worked. Thanks for the advise. I just put a lot of soured corn around the trap for a week. I never wired it open though as I really didn't see how that would make any difference over just setting it. I covered the trap in brush to disguise it a little. Last night I baited it for the first time and I had my hog this morning. I guess he wasn't as smart as I thought he would be.
