I'm seriously considering buying a barrel-type feeder with feed tubes below, thinking it might make it more difficult for hogs to reach the feed.

Do these type feeders work well for that purpose?

I saw one over the weekend that had fiberglass tubes that were replaceable but not sure if fiberglass would be durable.

All feedback is very much appreciated.

They work ok with hogs the great majority of the time. The feed head height is generally 38" to 40", or higher than many pigs will try to reach. So, most pigs will feed below on what has fallen out of the tubes. But, every once in a while you will get an angsty boar who will stand on his hind legs and do his best to wreck the feeder. I have many feeders out with customers, most with polymer feed heads. I'd say 95% never have problems with pigs.

Of course the best solution is build a pen around the protein feeder, but guessing you have already evaluated that.

Feel free to PM me for more info.

Thanks again for the feedback.

What is the optimum feed opening height to make it easy for deer but difficult for hogs to reach it?

I would set it at 40-42". Some of the younger fawns may not be able to reach it but the hogs won't. You could go as low as 38" but I wouldn't go any lower.

At 38" the coons can reach. Don't know about 42"

It largely depends on the body size of your deer. If the feeder is going to the Hill Co I tend to drop the height a bit. If going to S. TX than I'll make it a little taller. But, 40" tends to be a good compromise number. Most adult deer will be able to reach it, while keeping it high over pigs.

I agree with txag I've had pigs rub up against the legs to get food to fall out best solution is a pen
