Ok, well Im at a point now where I have nicer firearms, and enough that I think a safe makes sense. I don't need a 64 gun safe or anything like that. Probably a 15 or so is fine. Id like something that I can store handguns, and papers in as well. So what do y'all recommend? What kinda safe should I not go with? Thanks in advance.

Yes, gun safes tend to hold about about half as many guns as listed by the manufacturer.

Yes, to fit the advertised number, they'd all have to be straight stock, no scope .22's.

You didn't mention how many guns you are trying to store. If you have 3 guns and don't plan to buy more, a 15 gun safe is just fine.

On the other hand, most people buy too small of a safe and end up regretting it.

Like everyone will say "Buy once cry once" get double of what you think you need at least. The older you get the more toys you want.
I have guns from my grandpa, my dad, and mine. Have to have one for the guns and one for ammo still not enough room.

Another approach is to buy what you need now and buy another "small" one as you need additional space. No rule says you can only have one and it makes moving them yourself possible.

Yep just buy the biggest you can afford. Most safes people buy aren't meant to keep serious criminals out.

I bought a 60 gun safe, one of the nicer Liberty's. Already wishing I'd have gone bigger. A long range bolt gun in a chassis with a pretty big scope, two AR-15s, an AR-10, shotgun, .22, and a basic .243 bolt gun almost completely fills one side. You run out of room quick, especially if you want to keep a little bit of room between guns.

Why not go with two smaller safes with a sum (or slightly greater) capacity of a single, larger safe? A smaller safe would be easier to handle, while doubling the effort for theives to reach all your firearms and valuables.

No matter what size you buy it won't be big enough later. Think of it this way. Guns fit in there ammo pictures important stuff. All other things to keep in mind.

Buy the biggest you can afford. Safe sizes are kinda like tents. If they say it'll sleep 8, that means 4.

And make sure the lock is an S & G.

Get yourself an electric safe dehumidifier if you live in a area with humidity and a string of LED lights. Go ahead and install those so you can see when you open your safe. I went the quick route of battery operated tap lights that I attached with Velcro, and it is a PITA changing the battery all the time.

Buy a quality safe

Get one bigger than you think you need

Have it bolted to the foundation

Don't put it in a area where its easily visible; such as your garage where its on display every time you open the door.

Get those gun socks from academy and label them for each gun, that way you can find stuff and not beat the guns up as you move them in and out of the safe.

Get the dehumidifier - There are ones you plug in to dry out and ones you put in the oven to dry out....I prefer the electric plug in type.

I've been looking at safes and bought one today. I learned that the heavy gauge steel with 1 hour of fire protection and water protection is what you want. I found a 39 gun that meets this criteria with shipping cost included for $1325.00 at safesetc.com. Steelwater 39 Gun.

There is some logic to this approach however part of the security of a safe is in size and weight. Nobody is going to easily knock mine over (separate from being bolted down) nor easily drag it out of my home.

Not once have I ever desired to move my safe.

If small it's easier to take the whole safe. Now the thief has the luxury of time to get in to both.

Not nearly so easy with a large, heavy safe.
